Hello,
Could someone tell if I got the TIMING correct on my VW 1835, I'm thinking I'm off a tooth or two. Or can you only be off 180 degrees.
I have the # 1 cylinder TDC, the pulley lined up with the split case but the distributor gear is not perpendicular to the case like I think it's suppose to be. I think the rotor looks correct to the distributor cap.
Another question I have is do I need a fuel pump when the fuel tank is about the same height as the DUEL WEBERS I'll be using, I'm thinking gravity will work. THANK YOU ImageImageImageImageImage

Carbs and fuel: Use a Carter rotary pump @4 psi
with no regulator needed.
Timing: As far as your distributor drive, the slot is clockwise
too far. This is probably OK, but some want it
original. If you are not afraid of losing the little
washers down into the engine case, go ahead and
rotate the distributor drive one or two teeth
counterclockwise. Your rotor and distributor body
are correct.

Thanks jimp, I though it might be off but I needed a verification before I changed anything. I am a little afraid of changing it and possibly losing those washers, is it true you can hold them I'm place through the hole where the fuel pump goes with a screwdriver ? I also Googled that CARTER ROTARY FUEL PUMP and it looks good and will be PERFECT.
I appreciate you guys helping me out with all my questions on my project
( it's my first one ) It's good to get reliable answers from people who have experience in this stuff. Thanks.

I doubt that you should pull that distributor drive
out of there just for looks. In my opinion, the
only reason that polarity is critical on the distributor
is so that the vacuum-advance diaphragm body
is located in the correct position for optimum
timing adjustability.
The risk of dropping those washers is too great
to justify. If the engine has no oil and you can
turn the engine upside-down on an engine stand,
that is a little better. Yes, I have done it before.

Disclaimer: Please do not confuse my subjective
opinions as good policy. I am a "whatever-it-takes"
hacker that takes shortcuts as long as safety is
not affected.

So maybe I should leave it alone, and there is NO OIL in it yet.
Will it run the same either way?

I have seen these engines running well
with that distributor drive in all kinds
of positions. Unfortunately if the spark
advance dashpot housing cannot clear
the fuel pump or intake manifold, you
may not be able to set your timing
correctly.

This may be a dumb question jimp but I don't think I have a vacuum advance, do I ?

Your distributor has the appearance of
what is known as the VW "009". The
"009" is part of the VW part number.
The history of that distributor was to
provide a "fix" for the engines that came
with an oil cooler that blocked air flow
to cylinder #3. The theory was that #3
cylinder ran hotter due to less air flow
and therefore required a less advanced
spark timing (retarded timing). This
may have been part of the justification
for not putting a vacuum advance
actuator (dashpot) on the 009 and
just use centrifugal spark advance
(which most distributors all have). I also
believe that the mass of the governor
arms in an 009 provide for a customized
spark advance curve (earlier advance?).
More weight=lower rpm advance?

Wow I'm learning something new every day. So I don't have anything to interfere anywhere so I should be OK. THANKS
