I have a dog house style oil cooler on my 1776 and for some reason my oil cooler keeps going bad.... the first time it happened was last fall, I rode all night and it was fine but the morning after I started it up and it started spewing oil out of the top left vent, and I bought a new one and rode all day last Saturday and was all good, but Sunday morning when i started it to get it off the trailer it did the same thing. when you say top left vent, are you talkin about the hole comin out of the block? if so install new o rings there,and make sure you use the rite ones!. and if its on top of the oil cooler than your shroud has got to be vibrating a hole in the cooler.. get that bitch ready for dirty turtle bro, I expect to see you and phil there  hell I still got my valve cover rigged up from the last time we rode  but that will all be changed this week

also .when you first start a cold motor let it idle for awhile to get to a normal operating temp before you rev it up, cause the pressure might blow oil seals out |

Its coming out of the very top cooling vent, and i always let it idle for a while till its warm. If I figure out this oil cooler problem I know ill be there! But Phil probably wont make it... hes having motor issues, his end play is so bad its messing with timing and everything he needs to rebuild! Posted using the WoodsBuggy Mobile App |

im still not understanding.."the very top cooling vent"!! so from the top of the oil cooler or the bottom where the o rings seal it up?

hmmm.. well you definitely need a new oil cooler! maybe the shroud is vibrating on it up there? might try to do a little forceful maneuvering on the shroud when you reinstall. and maybe even put some thin weatherstripping in there. whats the chances of only you getting 2 oil coolers that give in the same spot! |

I would bet the engine has high oil pressure and is blowing the cooler apart. What weight oil do you run? Does it uave the high pressure relief springs in it? |

Sometimes the oil pressure relief valve gets stuck in its bore. I always run a metric reamer in that bore by hand. It does not remove any metal, but it sure removes alot of strange gunk. It is no surprise that the piston can get stuck in the open or in the closed position. Yours might be stuck in the closed position... and the cold oil is forced through the cooler at very high pressures. |

If it doesn't fall out with a little jiggling does that mean its stuck? The one closest to the pully practically fell out but the one back by the flywheel wont come out... how do i get it out?? Posted using the WoodsBuggy Mobile App |

The valve that is by the flywheel was stuck, I used a 1/2 inch tap to pull it out and wrapped a rag around a tire pressure gage to clean the hole out and it now moves freely so it is fixed, now I have to buy another 85 dollar oil cooler.. but I dont mind buying it this time because I know it wont happen again! You're not done quite yet. Since the valve was stuck, that means that the oil bypass passageway did not have oil flowing through it and down into the sump. In some cases, there may be too much residual gunk in that passageway that will block the bypass. You should test the system with compressed air before you sacrifice another cooler. |
