Hey ya'll,
I've started a 1679cc engine build.

I will be using:
Cbperformance 4140 69mm crank
Stock rods
Gene Berg equalizer pulley (5lb)
AA thick top 88mm P&C

stock Dual port heads & AK code case.
stock valve size, too.

Single 40 IDF carburetor
Pertronix SVDA dizzy.

I've looked into the Norris 329s & 330s camshafts, scat C25 camshaft & the web 218 camshaft as well as the engle w100 and fk41.

The engle and Web cams use a lot of lift to offer the same type of power as scat and norris so I'm leaning towards the lower lift cams for a single carb & small bore with stock valves.

Also will use an exhaust with a merged Collector but which size like out of 1 & 3/8" OR 1& 1/2" will be better for this build to achieve low end power?

The engine is actually going into a full body beetle but will be used in the woods for trail & light mud ridding.

most beetle engine forums are for high performance in drag racing and street engines, I figured ya'll would have more experience with this type of build

I would go with the 1 1/2 header. If you want low and mid range power I would try an Engle VZ14 or 15. Lots of lift for torque and not so much duration.

The vz cams do offer the type of power I'm looking for but they are harsh.
They have narrower cam lobes causing a faster "ramp" when opening the valve to full lift.
That's the only reason I haven't looked into using that cam.

When I wonder about a part I usually look it up on aircooled.net.
They inspect and use the parts and include the results/opinions
in the description

The reason why I'm asking about cams is the considerable difference in lift between cams that offer similar power according to the description.

Here is an example description:
#329S - THE "BUS CAM", MILD STREET CAM, OFF ROAD CAM - This cam was originally designed for bus engines, way back in the day.  It helped moved heavy cars with low displacement engines.  The super torque proved great for mild performance engines on standard VW's as well, and is also well suited for heavy off-road cars with smaller motors. We've found that this is a great cam for small displacement engines: 1641cc, 1679cc, 1776cc, etc., with mostly stock components. It's not hard on valvetrain components and can It pulls hard and still idles very smoothly, even down at 800-900 RPM's.  You might compare it to an Engle 100 cam. Unlike the 100, it can be used with stock (1.1) ratio rockers, or it be used with 1.25 or even 1.4 ratio rockers.  Using larger rockers will allow you extend your powerband, add horsepower, and allow you to fine tune your engine dynamics without having to split the case and change your cam again if you decide to give it a little extra zing later.  With the right combo, these will run well up to about 6200 RPM's. Will work great with standard valve springs for stock rockers. Recommend HD single springs for 1.25 or 1.4 rockers.  Very easy on lifter bores.  This cam is a great choice for an engine built for longevity.

ADV DURATION -- DURATION AT .050" -- CAM LIFT -- VALVE LIFT 1.1 -- VALVE LIFT 1.25 -- VALVE LIFT 1.4
272 degrees -- 232 degrees -- .329 -- .362 -- .411 -- .4

so this is comparable/similar to a w-100?

Norris 329s:
Cam lift: 329
Valve lift: .362 using 1.1 rockers
Adv. Duration: 272°

Scat C25:
Cam lift: .332
Valve lift: .365
Adv. Duration: 272°

Engle W100:
Cam lift: .383
Valve lift: .420 using 1.1 rockers
adv. Duration: 276°

All have 108° lobe separation. (Lobe center)

Engle uses a lot more lift to make the same type of power as other cams.
Which is confusing to me.

the scat c25 is also said to be similar to the w100.

I would run the w 100 works good with 1.1 rockers or 1.25 . The lift will help make power over a wider RPM band . 8 to 1 comp in a car on the street on 93 pump gas . I would run mahle pistons. 1 3/8 header would be best for TQ. A good set of bug pack hi-rev valve springs . If the car is light a w 110 cam . For more help call Brian Kaucher at Drews off road 513-868-9543 . He buids a lot of eng. for cars and buses

C-25 would work great plenty of low end torque. .easy on value springs plenty of power up to about 4800 rpm with your combination

Sorry for taking so long to come back.
I appreciate all the input.
I've been talking to engine builders and machinists, etc... about the engine and have revised my build and chosen the cam & exhaust.

Still building a 1679 as I purchased the cylinders already.

Now going to use:
Stock flywheel
Stock crank
Stock rods
stock pulley (maybe an aftermarket pulley but not a heavy one)
Sending it all off to be rebuilt, dynamically balanced and crank/fly modified for 8 dowels.

Scat c25 camshaft kit w/ pump.

New DRD L3 heads.

trimil euro sport muffler for design, will be able to build a skid Plate around it.

Same carb & ignition, just bought a nice Spanish made 40 idf.
