IM in the process of building a 1641 for my buggy as just a temporary motor. I bought 87mm slip ins, has 043 casting heads that I did a mild port job on along with the intake manifolds, my question is there a kit so I can run an oil filter instead of that strainer and what kinda power am I making now? Like I said mild port job all around, a 3 angle valve job and 87mm slip ins, everything else is stock

You can run this style, not the best but better than the screen.
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp ... C-C10-5384

run this style but you have to full flow the case.
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp ... -C10-5386E

run this pump with an inlet and outlet with an oil filter adapter.

These are Cip1 products, good for a temp motor.
Hope this helps..

Any idea what my compression ratio is? If it helps my head castings are 043's and I polished the combustion chambers but really didn't remove any metal

To find compression ratio you need to CC your heads and find out what your deck height is. then you will know your true CR. http://www.aircooledtech.com/deck_height/

So if my compression ratio is 8.2:1 would I still be ok running 87 octane?

If your CR is in the 8's , I would run mid grade or super if it was mine. 87 octane would be ok if you were in the 7's. Gas is really poor these days. Your antique air cooled engine craves octane. The slower burning fuel really does help it out when the motor is at full operatring temperature. If it was my engine, I would set the CR into the low 9 range and run 93 octane. Why not get the max power out of it when you are setting it up from scratch anyways? That's just me though. If it was a street driven car, it would be a different story.
