 Post subject: Lost oil pressure

Took my buggy out for a test drive on the motor I just put back together. About five minutes into it my oil light came on. I pushed it back in the garage and pulled the sending unit out and cranked it, NO oil came out so I have 0 pressure or flow. I'm guessing the oil pump gear is slipping on the shaft or it stripped the flange that goes into the cam. Gonna pull it apart to see tommorow. If this is the case can I just change the gears or should I change the whole oil pump? Anyone know what size oil pump comes with the scat engine kits? If I have to change the whole pump does anyone have any tricks to get it out of the case?

Yes, but I pulled the hose off the pump and its not even pumping there.

Gotcha. Then Yep guess pull it off. I'd go head an replace the whole pump.

Is it the same pump that was in the motor the first time around? You need to check the engagement of the drive tang into the cam. I would personally put a 26mm schadek in it.

Yes same pump as first time. If I remember correctly it was a shadek oil pump but not sure of the size.

I would pull the front oil pump plate off and then pull your gears .See what they look like if you got a problem with the pump your gonna see it at that point .

Pulled the oil pump tonight and found no problems. Drained the oil and found no metal. Gonna change filter tomorrow and fire it back up and see what happens.

Anyone got any ideas on what to check?

Just checked the oil with a flashlight and found some metal "pearling" Is this normal on a new motor?

Some pearling is ok as the new parts are wearing in but if u start gettin more than that then id worry

was the old cam a flat faced cam, and the new one a dished? if this is the case then you may need a pump for dished cam. Longer shaft on drive. Hope this helps. Just a thought.

Same cam, same pump. Pump is locking into the cam well. As said before I pulled the oil pressure sending unit out and got nothing while cranking it over. I heard no strange noises when it was running. I shut it down as soon as the light came on.

why do you think I should tear it apart? Because of the metal pearling or the lack of oil pressure? Not arguing with you just curious. To be honest if I gotta tear back into this motor I quit and I'm selling the buggy. I have had zero luck with this thing and I can't afford anymore problems.

Was this a new block? Is it full flowed or are you running a filter pump? Check to make sure that the inlet and out of the pump line up with the holes in the block. I would venture to say that whatever the problem is now,caused your issues before.

Pack the pump with grease or Vaseline then you should not have a priming issue. I wouldn't tear it down as some pearling is very normal.

I would remove and replace the oil filter and add a tee to the inlet side of the filter so you can prime the pump before initial startup. If you use a tee(with a removable plug) and make sure that your oil lines run downhill to your pump it is easy to prime. Also use a good quality filter, Wix and Napa Gold are the same thing. Just don't use a Fram it is worse than nothing.

This is not a priming issue as I had oil pressure for about 5 mins of my break in run. Its full flowed and the inlet hole in the pump lines up great. Its a shadek 26mm hd pump. I was using a cheaper bulk filter from work.

before you or everyone else sends you to the dark side, buy a new sending unit, they go bad all the time.. mine was acting up and freaked me out..$10 unless your sure its good :wink:
