nevermind. cut the oil filter open and found bad things inside. I just dont get what im doing wrong. ive put together several engines without a problem. but this vw is just not my thing. looks like i get to take it back apart. ill let you guys know what i find. anyone know of a good vw builder around columbus? if ive ruined any hard parts im done and the buggys going up for sale I cant afford this.

Tore the motor down today. Found the came gear was getting chewed up and flaking apart. Everything else looks great. I'm guessing maybe I messed up the crank gear putting it on and it chewed up the can gear. I guess all the trash from that clogged up the filter. Gonna order a cam and crank gear and slap it back together.

Was thinking maybe straight cut gears. Anyone advise against this?

MAKE SURE ALL OIL PASSAGES ARE FLUSHED INSIDE CASE, CRANK,PUSH RODS, ROCKERS ETC.(DON'T A FILTER HAVE A RELIEF VALVE WHEN IT CLOGS AND LETS PARTICLES BACK INTO PASSAGES). THE DIAGONAL GEARS HAVE MORE SURFACE AREA. I HATE EMPI AND SCAT!:(

Freak when you go to put on the crank gear put the crank in the freezer overnight. Then heat the cam gear in the oven to about 350 it will slide on like butter.

I wouldnt run anything but straight cut cam gears, jus be sure and run a good steel set.. got mine from CB performance

I've done a bunch of research and seems consensus says just don't use a cast gear. So as long as the gear is billet or forged I'm okay? I'm stuck with a dillema, I'm getting a gift certificate to apple tree from Santa but the only cam gears they have are EMPI and I hate empi but its billet construction so.......... anyone running empi straight cut gears?

Sounds like the cam gears didn't have any lash possibly. Have all the oil passage plugs been drilled out and tapped for NPT plugs in your block? For a mild build like yours,the EMPI gears should be fine.

I didn't even think about checking cam gear lash when I put it together (you live you learn) I was going to put npt plugs in but got to anxious when I got my crank and skipped it. Will probably be doing that this time though.
