Do any of you guys run this carburetor? We have to run partial choke all the time before it'll run.

The Solex 34PICT carburetor is a piece of junk. If you can find one that will idle correctly you are lucky. They are notorious for having problems with the idle circuit in them.
If it WILL idle with the choke on halfway, I would check for a small intake leak. That would usually be the cause for this symptom. Usually a cracked intake manifold boot.

WV Dave, sorry I haven't been able to get back in touch with you. Had to do some emergency flights the past few days. On that Solex use it as a boat anchor, but it won't be any good for that either. I have never known that carb to be anygood for anything at all. If you can find a Weber or something else. I run dual Weber 40's on my 1915 and love them.

We fixed the problem with the solex. Replaced it with a two barrel Weber

That's a good set up to replace a Solex. Lots of people do not like them but I ran one on my street car for 15 years and I think they are great. You are talking about a 2 bbl. progressive correct? You should not have any problems with that.

WVDave, Good choice on carb. Like Roy mentioned some don't like them that well, but i think it boils down to knowing how to adjust it and what jets to use. Good luck with it and hope you are doing well my friend

I have a solex pict34 and it wont idle. I am a rookie at this so should I waste my time rebuilding it or get a weber? will a weber fit on same manifold as my solex? I bought buggy last august, and just started on motor wednesday. with a little bit of gas in carb it fired right up. I ran it on saturday and today around the field and seems to run fine but wont idle. Not sure how to tune it. Also not sure what the small tubes coming out of carb are. Are they for vaccuum and were do they go?

What carb do you recommend for a stock 1600 dual port?

Hey Jason,

Don't give up on it just yet till you check a few things. Make sure there is a power wire attached to the valve on the side. When you unplug and plug back in can you hear the valve clicking? This is the fuel shutoff solenoid. If it is not working, the carb will not idle.
Second, the weber 2bbl. we are talking about requires that you change the center section of the intake manifold for it to work. It will not bolt right on to the stock manifold.

Jason.
I wanted to use the solex just to save money and keep everything simple. Cost of a new with intake and air filter ranged from $325-$400 but my son found this weber from a buddy at high school who's Dad built a bigger engine and put dual carbs on the new engine. Judd got a deal on the old carb and it looks new.

We have other engines and will probably get a kit for the solex and try to use it on something else. Don't know how true it is but I've heard some solex won't idle because the throttle shaft bushings are worn out and they suck air around the shaft. I dunno though...ha

Roy, should I run power to solenoid straight from battery?

Just take a jumper wire from the positive side of the coil over to the solenoid. The positive terminal is number 15 if you have a stock coil. Do not jump it straight from the battery or it will be hot all the time. The positive side of the coil is switched on and off through the ignition switch.

Was it hooked up before? If not, start it and see if it will idle now.

Roy, I started it up and it did idle. The ide though seemed a little high?
Should I let it run to warm up and will the idle drop after it is warm? Jason

Let the motor warm up first. Make sure the choke is all the way off. Do you have power going to the electric choke as well? Then back off the screw that adjusts the butterfly in the carb. This is the screw that is on the arm that moves when you step on the gas. Back it off till it is not touching the plate

Roy, yes this makes sense. But I do not have power going to electric choke. Also when adjusting screws on side of carb, what do they do? What happens when you turn them in or out? The vacuum tube on the front of carb, should it have a tube running to something, or sucking in free air? Sorry for all the questions but it seems like your the guy to talk to. Thanks Jason

Choke must be hooked up OR turn it so the choke stays wide open all the time.

Big screw

Roy, I hooked up electric choke and followed procedures on previous post but as soon as it warms up and choke opens up it stalls. I searched the web to find how to tune carb. I found a site that tells me to do the same as you told me. But they have start out with large screw out 2 1/2 turns and the small screw out a couple turns. Still no luck, so what shoould I do?

If it will idle with the choke halfway closed It usually means that you have an intak

Are worn throttle shaft bushing a possibility?

Yes that is possible. A quick check with the propane in that area will tell the tale.
