i have been told that if you paint you case that it will hold in too much heat and your motor will run to hot

Personally I think thats a misconception. Harley Davidson uses air cooled motors that have black painted cases, cylinders and heads everday and they dont even have a fan to blow air on them.

I will say that i've heard that too. In addition, I have heard that some paints can help disperse heat. You don't see to many hoped up motors that are painted. You not going to gain a whole lot by painting your case, sure it looks good putting it together, but how much can you really see after its all assembled.

I paint all cases if they are used.
Most of the time they are clay stained and you can't get the stain out.
They just look better, doesn't affect the performance one bit.
I paint the cylinders gloss black too.
Have been doing both for years with no ill effects.

I don't paint the new ones cause well, they're new and look good already........... 8)

Painting a case will cause the motor to run a little bit hotter but the difference will only be 5-10 degrees. Hardly worth worrying about.
Painting the cylinders on the other hand causes quite a bit more heat. Up to 20 degrees difference.
Go ahead and paint away if you wish.

I was always under the assumption that black absorbs the heat and dissapates it faster than any other paint.

Never did a study but have had no problems painting either and I build a lot of these.
Main reason I paint the cylinders is to prevent rust.
A bare cylinder will soon start ru

Like I said, the temperature differences are very minimal and not worth worrying about. I did do the study as I was especially concerned about the cylinder temperature differences using painted jugs vs. raw ones. This can become an issue for long term reliabality in a daily driver. For high performance situations it really dosen't matter.

I've never painted a motor or trans. because of them retaining heat. They do look good but looks don't get you far.At least mine never did.MIKE

Not arguing that point Roy.
I just don't like the rust blanket that comes over time on a raw cylinder.
I'm thinki
