Always have a vw manual beside you.there are always little things that big dogs think they know or forgot. For example a kid brought me a complete bug motor in pieces in a box. Well , I did not know a 1970 and down cam would not work with a 70 and up pump.It ran great for about 5 minutes. I open the book and there it was. Got a locally rebuilt Passat motor from the junk yard.If I had just took the oil pan off I would have seen someone had used too much RTV and the pick up screen was later completely clogged with rtv strings. It ran like a scalded dog for about 5 rides. Alaways look for the little things and the less obvious.

I havent done this its just a question but what would happen if you pointed the arrows on the pistons the wrong way? Just curious

Stock rods are offset so if you put the pistons on backwards and are still able to assemble it, you will soon seize it up or break a piston. Always make sure the rods are facing the correct way too, forging marks on the rods facing up.
