building an engine for my four seater (3 rib, 30"tires)

have new case on the way. waiting for tommorow to order my engine kit over the phone (to many options)

going to build a 1915 with stock heads and carb (for now)
have choice of scat cam. what will work good with stock heads and rockers? will i need double valve springs?
wheres the closest place to columbus to get heads bored for 94 jugs?
would it be worth my time to do a little cleanup porting on my heads?gasket match?

I would put in a 110 cam and build it, not gonna be worth the time portin and gaskets. Wouldn't be able to tell the difference. JMO

But I guess every little bit you can do helps

im going to change alot of things when i stroke it but just trying to get it together for now (before son goes to moms for summer break) the kit im using gives me a choice of scat only cams (c20,25,30,35,40) it would seem the obvious choice would be the c20 with stock heads but if its no extra i want the best that will run right.

if that is your only choices then yes, but don't believe all that c35 and 110 are almost the same mumbo jumbo folks try to sell you on, paper wise they may be, but the way they perform is not.

HP, If I was building a 1915 I would save some cash and get a pair of aftermarket heads, since an engine be it AC or WC a glorified air pump. The heads will make the most difference in performance when paired with the appropriate cam shaft.

Since splitting a case is a real drag I would look at a cam that can be used with ratio rockers so that when you do change heads the cam can be enhanced to match the new heads.

Have fun with the build, I don't have to tell you that for the $'s you are about to invest you could buy all the components to go WC and be fuel injected, but I know what a purist mindset is like.

Don't worry in a year or 2 it will have an ecotec but right now I'm just trying to get it together.I don't mind tearing the case apart to change things. I just need to get one good ride on this thing before my boy goes to his moms for the summer.

red is right, you want everything to match and flow together.. a budget build with cam, heads and carbs that flow together will run circles around a hi dollar motor full of parts that dont match 8)

i understand engine efficiency relates directly to air flow. Ive been building cirlce track sb chevys for years. I get how everything works together to create a scavenging effect but this time around i must understand that i have 5 weeks and little to no money to get this thing going. ive spent my money on a good new case so i have a good base to build upon later. taking this thing back apart to upgrade it is the fun part in my opinion so i dont care about that. I do however want to make the best with what im working with. just asking for a few pointers on prep and assembly because this is my first vw.

you got this man 8) ive had no issues using ultra grey sealing the cylinders to the block and glueing the case halfs together and i like to lap the cylinder to its particular hole in the head to prevent leaks.. a 1915 should be by the book, i jus like to keep a constant check on the rotating assembly at each step when building, even with new parts.. everything should be smooth as butter

No need for the rods Freak, I would check the dowel and hole for the bearing that looks like it turned or was assembled incorrectly. They make an oversize stepped dowel pin for that. It can cause a failure if that dowel pin is the least bit loose. DUH I forgot you have a new case, oh well I will leave the comment in case some one else can benefit from it.

spent a few hours debburing my case today. moore parts left alot of "hanging chads" from stroke clearancing. now clean the crap out of it and i think im ready to assemble. appletree backordered a couple parts on me just some external parts i can put on anytime but should be soon.

anyone know where to get a 1/4" pipe plug locally? ive found regular pipe plugs with the square lug on top but im looking for one to plug my oil pump. looking for one with a socket head like an allen srew or torx. i dont want to pay shipping and wait for a pipe plug. ill check jegs tomorrow but im sure they want an outragious price.

short block is together. got lucky and my old flywheel shims got my endplay to .004". may not make my deadline thanks to my heads being back ordered.

Try an ACE hardware in the specialty drawers. Or you could go to the summit store near you and get an aluminum plug with an Allen in the center

drilled and taped the type3 block plate to put my oil temp sending unit. anyone foresee any problems with this?
