got it going today long enough to break in the cam. distributer kept slipping off the drive and its running poorly. lots of popping and backfiring and number 2 exaust pipe gets really hot. only thing i can think is i screwed up my valve lash. ill check that tommorow.

not saying it aint the valve lash but I would check timing also, especially with what you said about the distributor, something is wrong or not fully seated and/or tightened down because that shouldn't be happening

Found out the clamp for the distributor was bent pushing up on the distributor every time I turned it. Got that fixed and double checked my timing since I only static set it to break in the cam. Found out my distributor is junk and is only advancing my inititial 7 degrees to a total of 15 at 3000 rpm (gee I wonder why the exhaust was hot  bumped my timing way up to 30 and this thing sounds like a beast but now it won't idle  so I need a distributor. Any suggestions or anyone local wanna sell one? My carbs have no vacuum ports only ports in manifolds. Do vw vacumn advance work off manifold vacuum or do I need port vacuum from the carb? Or should I just keep it simple with some version of the 009?

If budget allows Petronics makes a quality buillit distributor with electronic ignition. It will work with a stock Bosch blue coil. Or go with the tried and true 091 German even if used

So don't waste my time playing with vacuum advance distributors?

I agree with red, unless you can find a good used german made 009 with ignitor, the next cheapest option I would even consider is this

http://pertronix.shptron.com/p/dist-vw- ... nitor?pp=8

next would be this or msd

drove it today. im certainly happy with it. until i get a distributer it was full throttle or nothing. 1st gear is to short to really lace into. seconds gear pulls hard and the clutch slips in 3rd (field to short to get 4th).

is 2nd and third gear in a 3rib really that far apart? its almost rediculous. maybe correcting my advance it will help but it feels like im skipping 3rd and going straight to forth.

glad to hear you got it going. What size motor were you running before building this 1915? I'm fixing to put together a 1915 I think and just wandering how much of power gain over my 1600. I know that's a hard question to answer all depending on what heads/cam/carb combination is chosen. Was just wanting an idea on power gain. Thanks,

I was running a stock worn out 1600 DP. I know ive doubled my power (with the seat of the pants meter)
I believe ive heard that the stock clutch is good for 90hp and its slipping in 3rd so i would think i have atleast that. I have around $2200 in it. I know im gonna catch some water cooled grief for that but i dont care its ALL brand new parts and im extremely happy with it.

Glad you don't have to make motor noises manually Freak. I am glad your running. I wish I hadn't left my AC parts in Florida or I would send you a 009 have like three German.

You said that you went with a set of CB 044 heads right? I'd say that helped out tremendously on its own. I've been debating the whole water cooled setup but can't seem to bite that bullet yet. But that's a different subject in its own. All I've heard about the 1915's has been good, even better when paired with a 5 rib. Well I got the 5 rib part, just lacking enough power to get good use out of it! I'll prob be forced to take a cheaper approach as far as cylinder heads and try to find some good big valve stock ones. But again, congrats on a nice setup and hope you get good use out of it! 8)

if you got a good case that will save you $750 off my estimate. look into scat engine kits. fairly cheap and i was happy with the quality of every part in it. it came with mahle pistons and everything else scat.

i went cheap with the cast kit but i put together a low rpm package so im ok with that.

good deal. yea as far as I know I've got a good case to start with, only hassle really will be splitting the case to cut for the 94mm's and figuring out what I'm going to do regarding cylinder heads... Kinda pointless to go bigger bore and go thru all trouble without upgrading to a GOOD set of stock heads and a good cam. What casting number heads are considered the "good ones", or better yet what size valves are recommended for a 1915cc?
