Just a thought, VW coils should be mounted on their side, they run cooler that way.

Are you running points or electronics Ignition? Disconnect the coil from the distributer and then mimic operation by pulsing ground wire to motor. Does it produce a bright blue spark ? If not then replace it.

If you have a Bosch coil you don't need an external resistor. They have one built in

aircooled says there is 5 different "blue" coils

http://vwparts.aircooled.net/12V-Bosch- ... -012us.htm

http://www.ratwell.com/technical/BlueCoil.html

my local vw shop just ask if i got points or electronic and goes to back and gets what i need and have never had any trouble out them and i run the standard original petronix
