I have a air cooled 1915cc with a dry sump system. I have drained all oil from the oil tank and my engine to replace a oil cooler. I filled my engine with oil as needed. How much oil do I need to put in the dry sump tank?

Most of the dry sump systems ive seen and delt with, I put 4 quarts in the motor and filled the tank half way. Once it pulls the oil out of the motor the tank should be near full. If it over fills it will puke it out the over flow.

Thanks Kevin. I wasn't real sure thats why I asked. I know I got to much in it cause it is puking out the overflow. I pulled my dipstick and oil is way above the full mark. Just wanted to know the correct measure.

Why would you put any oil in the crankcase when the purpose of a dry sump is to keep oil out of the sump and in the tank? Why not just fill the tank and be done with it. The oil will tend to gravity into the Sump as it is and will scavenge it out when the motor is started. Just some thoughts here.

To help prime the the return side of the pump. I had one that wouldnt prime without doing that first and it wore the pump out, more less burnt it up.

really and truly a true dry sump motor wouldnt use the the stck pick up. Thats why they make the dropped sump system with the bungs on the sides. The oil is supposed to be pulled from there.

Ok I will agree with that. I have not had any issues with priming the pump. As long as the tank supply line is higher than the motor and will gravity feed the pump. If it is not than I can see were there could be a priming issue.

The sump system I have is plenty high enough. I"m not having any issue's with it priming. I just wanted to know the correct amount of oil to run. I had oil shooting out the overflow, so I knew I had to much. Thanks for the help guys, I got it where it needs to be.

Dry sumps can fool ya because of the inherit gravity feed back into the engine. Its best to check the oil right after you shut the motor down. I run mine about an inch above the baffle plate in the tank.
