Bought a beetle, drove it home, pulled the motor(stock 1600 sp, 34 pict-3 carb, 009 vac advance dist), put in my rail, ran like crap, had 2 bad plug wires, replaced plug wires, spark plugs and installed electronic ignition kit and would not start
Checked power to coil and dist and each individual wire and they were fine.
Thought timing might be off so I put motor at tdc and set rotor on dist to mark on dist body and it still will not fire
Help please :roll:

that is very strange, if it run fine when you drove it home it shouldnt have anything to do with the dist, wires, plugs, etc......

are you sure that everything is hooked up sorrectly and that you have 12v going to the + side of the coil when you are trying to crank it?

if all your electric is rite, then check for fire at the plugs,seems to me like i remember puttin one of those in that sort of disributor and it wouldnt work either. if plugs aint firing it aint gonna run, pull one out and crank it over and see if it fires,if not get rid of that distributor, i say :wink:

Hahaha! Definitely not sure I have everything hooked up right! Seems like I was getting around 9 volts at the end of my plug wires when checking everything with my volt meter. It did start after I put it in my rail and it was missing like crazy, determined I had two bad plug wires, that's when I changed wires and plugs and put the electronic ignition kit in. Bought the rail as a roller so it had a wiring harness in it already but it think was previously setup with an alternator and my motor has a generator so after hooking everything up I had one wire left unattached that had juice going to it but it was not long enough to reach the coil so I figured maybe it was for an oil cooler fan or some thing? Couldnt really find a wiring diagram for a generator setup so I just kinda winged it with the ac diagram on here and some stuff in the back of the appletree book. That's why I say I'm not sure about having things hooked up right :shock:
Just seemed like the dern thing should at least fire if I have power to the end of my plug wires?
What should my voltage be at the end of my wires and other places? that may help me run it down :?

Hey, I had a coil on one of my motors that sparked at plugs. Checked ok with a light.
but turned out that the coil was bad. it was not consistant, never seen it before.
watch that electronics burning up. don't take long if a wire was hooked up wrong even points burn pretty quick. May not help but coil is something to look at.

Make sure you have a 12V+ wire going to the carburetor. This turns on the fuel solenoid letting the car start.

I think you need to go back to the basics... Fuel, Air, Spark and Compression..

Your Compression should be fine since it was running when you pulled it out.

I would start to eliminate one thing at a time. You have introduced several new variables and everything needs to be rechecked.

Remember that the firing pattern in 1-4-3-2

After a new dist, coil, plugs and condenser i realized when i took the carb off i wasnt sure where this little black wire came from :oops:
