After performing much needed maintenance on my rail (1641+dual port) this winter its running rough as a cob. Rebuilt/rejetted carb, new intake manifold gaskets/boots, new exhaust, new 009 distributer( one advance spring removed), new plugs, along with replacing the gen with an alternator. Won't idle smooth below 1600rpms and one side ie cylinders 3&4 are running hot compared to cylinders 1&2. Valve clearances are .004. I can't find any manifold/exhaust leaks. I have not checked compression yet. Any suggestions guys? JSWIFT |

Yep, timed 15deg btdc on idle/ 32 deg btdc max at high rpms. Carb is a rejetted Solex 34PICT3. New plugs, wires, choke wired open. I don't understand why two cylinders on one side are running hot. I guess its going to come down to a compression check when I can get my guage back. JSWIFT |

Just spitballin, but might have 2 plug wires crossed? Doubt it though. |

15 deg seems way high at idle. I would try maybe putting the other advance spring back in, retiming it to 32 degrees at 3500 and see if it'll drop the timing somewhere between 5 and 10 btdc at idle. |

Triple checked the firing order on the plugs. Yea, the idle timming is high but thats how we run them around here. I'll swap out the distributer with a mild one I have laying around and see what happens. JSWIFT |

.004 is too tight on the valves...set em on a snug .006 and see if that helps i had similar trouble with my new motor getting hot on one side..could hold your hand on one valve cover and cook a hotdog on the other. once i done the valve geometry and "tuned' the motor, it took care of that problem |

I'm betting it has a vacuum leak somewhere. If it has any valve lash at all thats not the problem. In fact if you are running steel pushrods they should be set at a loose zero. You have already checked the firing order so thats out |

I'm having the condition Reno desribes. I'll recheck for intake leaks and reset my valve clearances which are now at .004-.005. (with steel pushrods) this weekend. JSWIFT |
