I am looking for a rail for my son and I to tinker on (guy time)... I am stuck with trading off some of my stuff to get one due to lack of funds... but that is another story. I found one that I may be able to work a deal for... however it needs some TLC. It’s been sitting outside for a while (guessing year) the guy took off the carb and left the intake open so I know it’s full of water... I can remember in the past reviving these motors and as long as the crank would turn it was not big deal...

thoughts on this? I asked him to remove the valve covers and send me a pic... I expect water to come out when he does... but no idea what the valves and or rings will look like.

Thanks he says the motor is a 1915 with a vz15 cam sounds worth recovery... just don’t want a head case is all... lots of rust on this buggy... will need to be stripped and cleaned and painted... but if the motor is good... it may be worth it.

Also has a 5 rib trans...

It all depends on how much he wants for it? It also sounds like that will be your parts engine? Mabie a good case?? :?: Just my 2 cents.

First question would be do you know this guy personally and do you trust him.there has to be a reason he took the intake off and did not care if water got in the motor.and how did it run before parking.if it rained in it for a year it's probably seized,wd40 just came out with stuff for stuck motors to put in the jugs to soak and help free them up.they still will be blistered from rust if it set full water but if you get it to turn you can check end play better.if it had no oil then you stand chance of cam and litters rusted.I have seen motors that ran after setting in water and being stuck then soaked the jugs with kerosene and diesel fuel to unstick but you take that chance.I would add a total rebuild to the cost and then if your still coming out ahead go for it,maybe just needs cleaned new bearings,hone the jugs if possible and a set of rings and your good,but that's if it's all good before parking.kinda going in blind if you don't know the guy PERSONALLY,seen a lot of people get who doo'd on them good buddy deals and then it just leads to hard feelings,and when you buy used VW anything there's always a chance of failure.not telling you not to get it but I would not count on it being good,just assume it's bad and bargain on it as it's bad,that way if it turns out good you come ahead.it's the ole pig in a poke,you don't know til you get into it.IMO.Chad :mrgreen:

Well I can't tell what the sticker says on the plates to see how long it has set.but it is titled and that's a plus,but don't know where you live and how far this is from you.it's set long enough for the garbage bags covering it to fall apart and he parks right beside it and has to walk by it everyday and has not took time to cover it tells me he doesn't take care of it or does not care about it.what's the bottom dollar on your tool box,cause this does have potential with having a title beefed up,looks like stock arms,and the five rib.don't see it jerking the wheels off the ground though.if you've got time go pull the valve covers drain the oil and check it out.I'd say way it sets not running,if it was me I'd put about 1000 to1200 at a value but that's if everything else like king pins and bearings was good but that's me.if ran and the tranny was fine maybe 18 to 2000, but it would have to be running for that.it's going to need some tlc.to many buggys floating around in really good shape for that money to buy a guess it's ok buggy IMO.you couldn't get that for the guns so it's nor a bad deal for what your trading as far as the guns go.Chad :mrgreen:

I dont know where it is, only have talked to him in email... he said his dad died and it was his... says it also comes with lots of boxes of parts (no description) the sticker says 02 07 on the plate...

Let me ask you guys this (thanks for the help)... I have two other possible trades but dont know what all they want... One guy has a buggy that has sat for a bit as well.. but says it runs fine.. has a 1900 cc motor (all I know)

Any way... I paid 5000.00 for the tool box but I know its not worth that on turnarround... I hate to get rid of it or any of my stuff... but I figure if I can move what I have for something my son and I can spend time fooling with then its fine... I dont work on cars like I used to and the tool box just fills up with clutter like an old desk. I just dont want to make a bad choice is all... I know cars but I dont know buggies well enough. I dont mind splitting it all up and painting and such... but I dont need something that turns inot parts and have to buy all new to make use of it... make sense? who knows... I may not find a deal that even works out.. or it might take some time to find the right person willing to trade... dont know.

yeah his dad died recently i think.... like last month.... it's been several years is what he told me.... i would go with the guy with the 1600 that runs. it looks in best shape and sell the tool box to fund new parts or upgrades... just my opinion anyways.... you start having to rebuild and it could run ya 4 or 5k just to build up a motor.more to get one rolling unless you find a motor you can trust....

Good point... and for the record... I dont have the guns... Someone wants to trade me the guns for my tool box... then I would have the guns to trade for a rail...

thanks guys... I will see what the owner of the black rail wants to do... and if anything changes... I may post something for your thoughts... I know this wasnt the right place for this... just sorta ended up with me having a lot of questions and no one to ask is all.

if you search craigslist use "search tempest" you can search craiglist from every city within a set area...100miles...200 miles... it is how i went to pittsburgh for mine and was worth it... it pays to search 20 cities for a couple weeks

My dad bot a buggy one time and the motor was in parts froze in 5 gallon buckets and we put it together and ran fine. We rode for 6 years and had no problems. And as far as i know the guy that has now is running the same motor. It was an 1835 with dual carbs
