Post subject:  Looking for info on power steering setup
I'm looking at putting power steering on the buggy for the wife.what brackets and pumps work the best?would I be ahead to buy a kit or just fab one up myself?I know a few of you all have or are running it so any input would be great.Chad :mrgreen:

I run a jeep box and all jeep tie rods and so on ..... with factory subaru pump .
afterburnt runs jeep box and geo tracker pump and homegrown brackets .
meanbean and wheelieup run tracker pump and tracker box and homegrown brackets .
all are very cheap and pretty easy to make ........ well kinda 8)
meanbean and wheelie up have templates for there setup if it helps ask them or i can call them and get them for ya !

I run the GM box which is the same as the Jeep box and would never run without one again. Heavy, but I don't think you can break it with a hammer, lol.

I use a gm box ford c4 pump used on about all ford with remote reservoir. very small and easy to fab a bracket of the alternator stand

Get with Eric Debord, he has a great setup that you can copy off of him and it is a reliable and cheap setup too.

Get with Eric Debord, he has a great setup that you can copy off of him and it is a reliable and cheap setup too.

I think he runs a grand am rack.yes it is sweet I've steered it when it was setting still and you could turn it with your pinky finger.Chad :mrgreen:

Its not that it is hard to turn a wheel on a buggy without power steering. But you remove alot of the feedback from bumps and can be set to alot higher turn ratio depending on the hardware. Not needed when you go up a hill, it's coming down hitting rocks, roots and ruts that makes you appriciate it.

I use a charlynn torque generator for this very reason,,,it's more like having the Cadillac of steering stabilizers,,,,when done right ,you have zero bump steer or feedback and steering control can be done easily with one hand at all times.

Lol,no it's just that after 20 years of riding in the passenger seat,smoking and drinking at the same time,it's hard for her to do those two things and steer,lol.no it's just my buggy is heavier than a tank and it's a little tough to steer,she has put a few miles on it the last three weekends and has done awesome,likes the skinny pedal a little to much though going through the mud holes.but the biggest thing is coming down hills and creeks in the washouts she got the front wheels dug in and it would jerk it out of her hands and kick the wheels sideways,then her trying to get in reverse and get the wheels straight on a steep is a little tough on her but harder on my buggy,(3 rib).so I figured power steering would make momma happy and you all know that if momma ain't happy I'm not happy lol.besides anything to make it better for riding will help get her out on the trails driving more.playing for 3 or 4 hours on the buggy with out it ain't to bad,but like yesterday we left house at noon got back at 1:30 am.power steering would have been nice for her more than once so thanks guys for all the info it's greatly appreciated.Chad :mrgreen:

Chad once you go Power steering you will never go back to manual. :shock: I would never run a Buggy with out power steering. I see a lot of guys are using Automotive setups and they seem to work well. I prefer a Howe Servo/Ram system my self. BTW Firebug "Bump Steer" has nothing to do with terrain feedback. Bump Steer is the amount of Toe In/Out thru the supension travel. The term gets confused with Feedback all the time so your not alone. :wink: :mrgreen:

I run the charlynn on my race buggy and had it on my old woods buggy and loved it! The problem with using steering boxes off other cars is the geometry is soo far out of whack on a buggy, that youll never get it right without tons of fabrication. Just like what firebug said about the placment of the inner tie rod ends, thare is only 1 correct place for them and the closest you'll ever get is with a "off road" rack or lots of fab work to get it to the same place. Mr. Wright or Mr. Saco didn't make their racks like that for the hell of it. But then again were just tooling around in the woods so steering geometry isn't gonna make all that big of a difference anyway :mrgreen:

I use 4 inch tsc pulleys 5/8 bore for the pump pulley. pump is of 96-05 ford taurus a-1cardone/carquest # 20-273

I like the 1 belt idea, no playing with shims any more, ( assuming pump is adjustable).
