gettin ready for a winter rebuild curious to see if anyone has some input on a couple things....biggest question is how long will a 1835/1916 last compared to equally built and abused 2275/2232. who makes a good set of aftermarket heads for around 500 a pair. and anything i want to stay away from ? (brand, manufactuers,or vendors) thanks in advance to all who reply

i run a 2276 and buddy has 1835. we built both engines. mine has some better parts than his (mostly aftermarket crank obviously and heads). i would say he is slighly harder on his than i am on mine but not by much. mine has a full season on it now with only a slight drop in compression, no smoking, and no powerloss that i can feel. if end play checks out its going right back in for next year. his is bout the same with little more loss in compression and some light smoking. needs new rings we thinking. in my opinion they will both last about equally as long in the woods. lets face it we beat the snot out of them. maintaince is the key to a long happy life. that and carefull assembly practices. but hey thats just my 2 cents!!!

oh yeah and on the heads buy the best you can afford!!! they will be worth it. and engine is just an air pump. more in + more out = more power. have seen to many well built ehgines that are far below potential cause they cant breath! i am running cb perfomance street eliminators with some mild porting and love them!! but they are little more than 500

All depends. Both my 1835 and 2180 lasted 19 years before needing attention. The 2180 had 19,000 miles on it. Crank, rods, line bore and thrust, oil pump and cam were like new. Lifter bores and valve guides were shot. P&Ls would of been ok except for rust damage to two cylinders. Lifters had normal wear but looked like they were in for 80,000 miles. This engine was built with almost all new parts, DeMello race crank, case, Webber cam (VZ 30 style)and lifters, Melling oil pump, GB pressure relief cover, Dean Lowry heads, Rimco race rods, Cima Mahle piston/liner set.

The 1835, known good rebuilt case, Rimco stock rods, Rimco 10/10 stock crank 8 dowel, used DDS lightened flywheel all balanced. Cima/Mahle pistons and liners, Melling oil pump, Gene Berg pump cover, Webber (VZ 15 style) cam and lifters, out of the box 041 heads with hd single springs and stock retainers. A stock retainer was the only failure taking out a valve. Next I used aluminium retainer but they started going bad right away changed to hd retainers and no more problems. The rings finally wore out. I have not taken this engine apart but I suspect because I only used HD single valve springs the lifters will be in better shape. I expect the lifter bores to need resleeving.

The 2180 has accumulated another 20,000 miles on it. Since lifter quality is iffy these days I had Web copy the Webber cam. The Web cam and lifters I used were a disapointment broken in with Bradd Penn racing oil they needed constant adjustment and the Bug Pack lash caps were a joke 2 set were warrantied out in less than 2 weeks I switched to swivel feet rockers and then the cam wear was evident. At 2000 miles I replaced the rings and used another Web cam and Udo Becker tool steel lifters. The lifters solved the cam/lifter wear but the rings never really seated and the last 4,000 miles there is excessive blowby and a lack of power. In a month or so I'll be switching to 90.5 pistons and liners and a smaller cam like a VZ 15 or VZ 14. I expect the valve guides to also need replacement.
With both engines I ran dual oil filters and an extra oil cooler.

These day Steve Tims at http://www.performancework-shop.com has the best deal on heads $600-$750 a set and he ports your intakes and will tweak port volume and head cc where needed.

Unless your using thick wall 92s I would build a 2276 or larger engine engine since it will not have to work as hard but a 1915 with a VZ 14 or 15 cam will pull very hard and be much cheaper to build. At one time attention to detail including getting your jetting correct made or broke how your engine lasted. These days poor quality parts also have to be taken into consideration. As always keeping the engine in tune and controlling your right foot also makes a big difference. :)

Excellent post by Perrib. Could not have said it better.

My 2276 runs on pump gas and has still not had a head off of it after 8 years of abuse. How you "manage" the right foot thing is key. Junk parts must be avoided at all cost. A stroker does not work near as hard as the 1915 so I feel they last longer and hold up better. Attention to detail during the building process is another huge thing to pay attention to.

i bought a set of mofoco 042s cut for 94mm jugs when i built the motor i have now. When i got the heads they had chunks missing out of the seat of the head where the cylinder seals up. I called them about it and they told me all their heads cut for 94mm are like that and they would be fine. Low and behold the heads leaked like hell. I tried copper gaskets and still leaked. I called them and told them about my problem and they said it was builder error. I then asked for my money back and they told me they couldnt refund my money because i ran the heads. They ran for about 45 minutes on my run stand. They wanted to give me store credit to buy something else from them. After about a week of argueing with them I got a lawyer to conact them and shortly after my money was put back in my account. I will never buy anythings else from MOFOCO.

Sometimes in the business world an inferior company moves in with a bad product and buys a trusted name and sells their junk under that name. My favorite example is General Electric. They build the best jet engines and locomotives, but there house hold appliances are banned from my house.I told Tim at Southern Buggies ,"If they keep feeding us junk, then we have no choice but to go watercooled. And the industry needs to clean themselves up BEFORE they go out of business".I do like those new solid blocks they have now days.My son's motor has some gooood stuff in it from Tim but I hope they keeeep the junk out of our game.

your exactly right about that. I tried to save a little cash by buying the MOFOCO junk but in the long run I ended up buying CB heads. Lesson learned. I also had big problems with a 86mm bug pack crank. The counter weights was hitting dead center of the lobes of the cam. I bought the crank from Tim and he did more than what was expected to fix the problem. Come to find out bugpack had a bad batch of cranks with casting defects. There again I went with the CB 86mm crank and it fitt perfect.
