Hate to hijack your title, but was also wondering from people what a stock type 4 2.0 is comparable to in a type 1? Also wondering if dual 45 dell's will work on a stock 2.0 type 4 motor? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

The stock T4 2.0 would be a better motor that a comparable T1 in the same size for a woods buggy. They have lots of torqe for hill climbing and low speed riding. Your able to lug them when ypur in between gear requirements. Not great for high speed due to they fall flat at high RPM however for woods riding you dont need much more than 4500 RPM anyways. The disadvantage of the T4 is you would really need to convert it to aan upright cooling system to keep the weight down and to not have the inlet of the cooling fan on the back of the engine down low.

On the 44s, they would work find. You will have to buy a set of T4 carb intakes for them. Also you will need a T4 exhaust. There is only a few sources for them and they are pricy or you can make one.

Thanks for the tips. I have an existing built type 4 motor but it has bad heads (48x38mm) and needs new pistons, rings, and 96mm jugs. Don't really want to split the case but it is to have FAT performance crank, and cam and heads. So I have the upright fan,45 Dells, and exhaust already. Just don't want to invest the money right now to look the whole motor over. I am going to buy a stock 2.0 type 4 rebuild long block for now until I can rummage enuff money up to re-do the built motor. Does anybody know where I can get the best deal on a rebuilt 2.0 Type 4 ???

You should call Curts dad, Bernard. He built me a 2950cc type 4 that I ran in the woods. This thing was a ground pounder, forgot crank size but it had 105mm pistons, 40x 50mm valves, ported heads, upright fans, & trimil stinger that was 2" but I cut it off and made it 3". I think he still has enough parts to build another one, of course you will have to go thru curt to get his number.

As far as rpms with a type IV, it depends on how you have it setup. My 1.7 I had in my 914 would come alive around 3K and fall on its face right around 7K. I'm running a 2.5 subi in my baja cause it big and heavy and I already had the engine. I ran a 2.0 vanagon type IV in my last rail. I would run another type IV in a rail in a heartbeat. I liked it much better than my type 1. I would prefer to fuel inject the next one. I ended up with dual 44 idfs on the last one. I tried a centermount weber progressive to start with. Don't waste your time on that one.

Hi,
New to the site...full of great information.
I'm currently putting a 1.7 Typ.4 in my ancient warrior chassis.
The only necessary modification I needed to do was to remove the needle bearing from the end of the T4 crank and bore the flywheel and press fit a new needle bearing in the flywheel.Use a new Typ.1 bearing, press bearing in until t

ya tell me about it . i have a DTM and ham heads. i have two motors to use one is a 2180 roller crank motor and my T4 my stock t4 was just so smooth running off road i think i am going to stick with them and save the other for a porsche 550 kit car.
are you planing on rebuilding the T4 if you do get your cam from jake and let him know what you have in it and what you are doing with the car my cam is a bit big for off road so i may change it out . this is the car i am putting it in.

i bought that buggy from blbronc (blake) a couple of years ago. i sold it to a friend of mine when i built my current buggy around 2 years ago. blake could tell you who made the frame i dont remember. the beam i had made by drews offroad in southern ohio it is 8" wider with custom shock towers. the orignal beam that came with it when i bought it got ripped apart in a wreck. i had pics but lost them when my computer crashed.
this buggy had a smooth ride, there are these rr tracks where we ride and next to them is a dirt road that has small wups, one after the other. most buggys just use 1st or 2nd gear. i used to hit 3rd and fly through the wups
like they were nothing. i think it had something to do with that long front end either way that buggy was sweet.
the rear trailing arms were at least 3x3 if not longer, once again blake might remember. he might even have some pics.
b.t.w. its currently fs on ebay.
