ok went to take my buggy ridin yesterday, hauled it bout 60 miles away and tried to ride it and when it cranked i burned the points up.... sanded them down cranked again and yet again burnt them up quick.....and again.... so i put a new coil on it thinkin it would fix it still doin the same thing...... (these are internal resisted coils like supposed to be on it) so i stayed broke down all day.... got it home and put a 3rd new coil on it and still burnin points up in a matter of seconds... even put new points on it and everything is set right to the book....now im really tired and gettin mad at it and i jus need to get away from it ....... anyone ever had this happen or jus my dumb luck? i mean someone please tell im jus overlookin somethin super easy while im frustrated |

are your wires going to ur coil hooked up correctly like ur negative to negative positive and positive if u have them backwards ul burn ur points up and make sure there not touching each other and grounding each other out and putting to much overload on ur points making them burn up also.. my first buggy had that problem plus i put an electronic igniton on mine instead of points |

i got them hot to positive and points to neg..... nothing touchin or rubbin |

Are you talking about stock style VW points? I guess you are since you said you sanded them. They dont have a hot wire at all. Only 1 wire, usually green, from the condensor (on the side of the dizzy) to the negative side of the coil. |

im talkin bout the other wire on the coil not the points.... thats on the neg side... its been runnin perfect then out of nowhere it starts this |

Is that ole copper naked braided cable touching the wall inside the dist? Oh and here is another. My son's ignition switch was shorted inside and was always staying powered as it sat under the tarp.Use a test lite to see if you have power to the coil even with the switch off. Better use a voltmeter. Or a noid.It could have just a tiny trickle of power. Do you have something else runing off the positive side of the coil that is shorted?Also a condenser on its way out can burn up points but not as a fast rate you are going at. |

you talkin bout on the points itsself? no nuttin touchin in there.... i had alot of people who had buggies and junk down there and they couldnt think of anything either..... thats why im confused |

A bigo hungry elecrtic fan connected to your coil with a skinny coil wire going back to your switch could have overloaded and is giving your coil and points grief. |

when i first put mine together and took it it out i burnt a set of points out and then inspected the distributer to find that the spring under the points for the mech advance (i beleive ) was broke and the distributer was not as tight as a spare one so i just replaced the whole thing with a used one and have never popped a set of points yet . knocketa ,knock, knock, knock, on wood ......

dont have a bigo electric fan and its vacuum advanced distributor....... im bout to take everything apart and jus go thoroughly thru it |

Get an ohm meter and check the resistance of those coils you've been using. Should be somewhere around 3.2-3.7 ohms. |
