I replaced a broken set of rocker arms( 2 wavy washers and a hair pin broke) with some stock rocker arms. Drove about 6 hours and today I was going to adjust them and seal the valve cover, when I opened the valve cover I found a broken wavy(spring) washer!!?! This happened on the same side and cylinder as before #4. Is this a case of low performance parts in a high? performance engine?? It's a 1915 with dual carbs and I don't know what cam is in it. I'm going to use a set of bolt together arms in i,,, is this a sign of something worse to come or simply bad luck?? Those spring washers break all the time.You can shim them up without using those spring washers.Have you ever chacked your geomatry? That usually causes wear like that.MIKE |

You should put solid rocker shafts in that motor especially if you have a bigger than stock cam. The solid rocker shafts will eliminate any flex caused by the bigger lobes on the cam and also keep the rockers in place not let them roam side to side like stock shafts. O.K. I have a set of bolt together shafts... What is the side play that is allowed?? There has to be some right? .005-.010 more or less?? I have .015-.030-.060 spacers/shims.. I can't seem to shim the inside arms or the out side arms with less than .012--- That way tighter than a stock set. Ran the engine and it was quiet. No loud rapping. I don't want to junk this engine it ran/runs good. I would like to know why or is there something else looming in the shadows?? Sty safe this Labor day weekend I want to see lots of pics and vid of the hill climbs and I will post some of the dunes.. Thanks for the help Dave ( it's a runnin) T |

You have to remember that those washers are 30+ years old. Plus they were designed to be used with a stock camshaft. Not only that, they were to be used with stock RPM's and stock horsepower of about 50. Pushing it past stock in any way will cause them to fail. This is a very common thing. Even on bone stock engines that get ran hard, they will break. Use solid shims and you will be good to go. Roy |

Hey Roy, would you know the side play in thousandths between the arms and the stand?? Also I have to do some head work. Tha side that did not have any problems has a crack in the head starting at the push rod tube travels up the stand to the spring pocket around the top and back down the other side of the stand to the other push rod tube. And yae it goes all the way through the head.. Lots of oil on the under side of the engine. Thanks Dave T |

Try to get them as tight as you can with the shims you can find. Leave at least 3-4 thou. |

I keep breaking that wavy washer and broke one clip all on #4. Can i use some bronze or brass spacers to fill gap where wavy washer goes? 1641 w/110 cam, mofoco 040 heads,stock carb. Thanks Jason |

Yes, you can use bronze or brass shims but steel ones will last longer. They get oiled pretty good so I would not worry about that. You can buy a shim kit with different thickness shims. I think Bugpack has that. |
