Wife's buggy needs more traction. Got sucky 45* 8 ply cut Goodyears on it. Dont really wanna spend the $400+ on a set of 8 ply firestones for a two or three rides a year trail rider. Already spendin some $$ on makin it automatic. Gonna bolt her goodyears.

Anyone used hexhead bolts to bolt your tires with ?
I think it may be a bad idea, that even with a liner they might poke the tubes.

Tried one, drilled 1/8" hole, reamed it lil on the inside, and ran the bolt from inside out with a fender washer on it with an impact and double nutted it.
Looked good from the outside.

The Grade 5 hex head 5/16, 2 3/4" bolts I already have.
Grade 5, 2 3/4" long carriage bolts I'll have to order 144 of 'em.

So whats the prob? Do you guys ussually just use carriage bolts? And does it make the overwhelming differance everyone seems to say it does?

However even doing it this way I had way too many tube problems. The bolts eventually wore holes in the tubes. I even put ¼” conveyor belts inside the tire to stop the bolts from rubbing the tubes. That worked but my tires were 120lbs each with 31X15.5X15 ditch diggers cut to the cords and every 3rd lug cut out, steel wheels, bolts, and liners. I tried a thinner liner out of a cargo van floor mat but it eventually wore through that. Might want to contact Curt, he made some kind of press to press the studs through. The thing is to keep the hole as small as possible, but as you know when you drill a 1/8” hole in a tire and pull the bit out you can hardly see the hole.

I gained traction on my 45s by cutting a 1" wide notch in the center of each lug. It gave them more corners and surface to bite and they cleaned out better. It may be just enough for her. I know it made a difference on my Buggy. May be a better route than the PITA studs.

So just basically bisect each lug with a 1" wide cut thru it? Making like two shorter lugs on each side?

Her tires are rough anyways. Got 'em off a roller I bought for other parts several years ago. Look like a drunk monkey cut them with a steak knife .

i'm getting ready to try something also on my 45's.going to cut the center so that the lugs do not over lap each other,this would have to open it up some more to get a better bite.jmo but i will let you know how it works.chad

That does help 'em. That needs to be done to every kind of v tread. Helps 'em flex.

Yes. I had considered making every other lug into 3 sections to stagger the cuts however it was twice as much work and I felt the lugs would ware faster. Try that and let us know. All you have to lose is time.

That's how every pair of v-treads that are cut (well, cut right) are... There should be no overlap at all.

Well Koko, when I come down there you might have to give me some advise on mine. Still bone stock Goodyear 45's and I run higher air pressure then most. But like I keep saying, when I start having traction issues I'll air down. Must be that damn water Larry

Has anyone ever tried just screws like the ice racers? I'd be affraid they would just pull out. And Koko, I worry that if I cut them all up I won't get much life out of the tires, compared to stocks. And the damn things are getting a bit expensive, lol.

The part that wears is not cut off so cutting the tires does not shorten life,,matter of fact it makes them last longer because you are moving forward when spinning and the spinning is for less time. Plus the cutting makes them more flexible,,,thus bite better so less spinning. An uncut tire just spins more and moves forward less.

Ok now that is some logic I can rap my head around. But the sidewalls get cut to the cords on mine by rocks, lol. Thats the area that worries me. As well I guess as worrying about them getting punctured between the lugs. But hey, everyones been doing it for a long time so it must be ok, right?

It does not shorten the life by cutting them at all.......It hurts them in no way unless somebody cuts them wrong and cuts almost all the way through the tire. Plus, the lugs are gonna wear down just as quick uncut anyways.
They're 8 plys. Rocks are not gonna just poke through em. My flotation 23* 8 plys are cut ALL THE WAY down to teh chords on the sidewalls, and no rocks go through them. I can cut em without cutting the sides out, too. The sides can't be cut out of them off-brand 45* tires anyways. The sidewally are pretty much solid threads.

What I have are Goodyear 45 deg 4 Plys, been real happy with them stock and the extra weight over them.
