My 23 degree stones are mounted on 15x14x5"offset alum beadlocks and I run 4 lbs of air, Mine are fairly new and measured to be 29 1/4" as well.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am running 33" (actual height 32") boggers now and I am considering going to a smaller diameter tire. I am running 3:44 1st gear and a 2500# buggy, it makes it tough in tight woods. Probably better off going to a 3:75 1st however thats a lot more work than cutting a few tires. Also the Weddle 1st/2nd gearset is $1100.00 now! I would think a 3" difference in tire diameter would help, just not sure if it's worth a $600.00 gamble.

It might be a gamble, however, you would be able to recoup most of your money on a set of 23 degree stones if you didnt like them only after a few rides. They seem to sell very well, even ones that are wore out,,,lol

from what ive been told, an inch equals .10 on the gear ratio.....if you had 373 gears and went from 31s to 36s it would equal a 327 ratio

for $600 dollars you could buy another vanagon trans with 3.77? 3.78? factory first.. sounds like the better gamble to me knowing you could sell it and make all your money back if your not satisfied 8)

I already have the makings of a stock vanagon trans along with a super diff sitting on the shelf if I wanted to go that route. Yea the stock first would be a good ratio , unfortunatly stock 2nd is 2:06 and I need at least the 2:36 likeI have in mine now to pull the weight. Seeing that the single piece main shaft houses both gears not much I can do without changing it. The trans I have in the buggyare Weddle 1st thru 4th along with a peliquin torque biasing differential. Not your run on the mill trans and IMHO is required for a 250 HP turbo Subaru motor in a 2800# car. So the bottom line is try smaller tires or spend 1100.00 bucks on the gears and about 45 hours of labor R & Ring the trans. It is by no means an easy task to get the trans out of my machine.

Odkynuck from what I hear your buggy is a runnin son of a bitch so any tire you out on it will take you where u need to go . Just sayin

this is just my opinion but I would think by the time you figure in shipping you will only save about $450 buying tires over a gear stack and the boggers will probably outlast 3 to 4 sets of firestones from my experience, and not doubting word but geez, while I haven't seen your buggy in person, but from the pics or any buggy I have seen, 45hrs to r&r the tranny seems a bit long

Chris, replacing the the gearset is the easy part. Getting to the trans is the time consumming part. 45 hours is on the high side and if all goes well the whole job would take about 35 hours.

I agree however getting the weight moving is my current problem especialy in tight woods.

Running well is the understatement of the year, I drove it on Saturday and was more than impressed. In second gear about 1500 rpm jump in the throttle, as soon as the turbo spooled up the car wanted to jump sideways. Get that under control and power shift into third and it wanted to jump sideways again, and this was on a paved road. The problem is starting out in first gear, it takes too much throttle to get it to start moving on flat ground. I can't imagine what it would be like on a steep hill to get it moving.
This sums up my driving experience in his car...............
