The van alstine one is what I have, it is a pretty good setup and cuts the 8 ply tires like knife thru butter, you can get up to 1" cutting blades with this one, I cut my tires and cleaned them up in 4 hours and got it from http://www.poske.com/detail_it.htm?groupid=1196

I've got the same one and the problem I have with it is that the head is too big and I can't get into any tight places with it. I end up using my older/cheaper one to do most of the cutting

ive got friends who race dirt cars and they have the van alstine also and i agree on the "head" being too big but i feel like the "handle" to tighten the blade that hangs out the is what really gets in the way most of the time and i read somewhere on another forum that they just came out with a newer version that doesnt have that handle hanging out the side

I agree with the clearance issues and the head being too big, I took the handle/screw out and out in a shorter button head screw in it that uses an allen wrench, it solved most of the clearance issues, I also have a regular groover (Ideal) and it takes 3 times longer to cut through the rubber on the tire. I just set the blade real deep and use lower setting (1) to do the cutting to where you need the edges cut and the rest on (3) with the blade set shallow, it works for me

Good idea on removing the handle.
I've found that for removing alot of rubber quickly the vibrating multifunction tool below [$19.95 from harborfreight] really works good, especially on boggers
Two people is best, after the cut is started, grab the edge of rubber with channel locks and pull up, while cutting and it just flies through.
Pretty forgiving on the cords also.
Key thing is pulling rubber away from tire with pliers, as you make the cut.
Fastest tool yet, and I have the $375 groover also.
If you don't pull up,it gets to hot and doesn't work worth a flip.

hey maddog i was looking at the dremel brand at lowes and home depot about a month ago and wandering how they would do but didnt know which attachment to get with it, which did you use the smooth gasket scraper looking one or the one with teeth?

yea i have one they are good but when it comes to grooving a whole tire the small ones like that dont take out a wide enough cut so it will take you years to finish one

i dont remember the type of tire grover that i was useing but it was a pain in the ass to use. then i got the idea to take a torch and heat the tire 1st then use the grover and it cut like butter. doing it this way i got a tire done in about an hr and half where it took me about 5 the other way on the 1st one.
