For the money DOM is the best structural tubing. Chromolly is the best untill you consider the cost. ERW tube is OK for some applications, low structral loads and bracing.

For a buggy chassis, 1 1/2", .095 DOM is plenty good.

All jokes aside ---take a piece of 11/2 seamed tub and a piece of DOM put them on the ground hit it with a hammer the dom is much harder to bend flat .I build my C.D. out of dom

Wall thickness and diameter also are factors to consider you could use erw in 120 wall @ 1.75 for the mains and drop back to .095 wall for secondary members. just remember your getting older less flexible and you heal slower than you used to?

I made my suspension with DOM tubing but both frames I have owned from Berrien and Beeline were both ERW 1.5"x.095. I would bet all those Beeline Cobras running around the woods aren't DOM. Brace it and weld it correctly and I don't think ERW is a problem. I personally would not use chromolly. I don't have enough experience welding it and I do know it can be very brittle if overheated. I would rather a tube bend any day before it just shears. Just my 2 cents. If you can swing it use DOM, but don't think it to be necessary.

Chrome-Moly is stronger than DOM and DOM is stronger than ERW

ERW stands for Electric Resistance Welded. This is a mild steel tubing that started out as a flat sheet of steel, formed into tubing and welded. DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel and it is actually ERW tubing that has gone through a second process that shapes and smoothes the tubing so that the walls are more uniform. This in turn makes the tubing stronger than the original tubing. Chrome-Moly is an alloy of steel which incorporates both Chromium and Molybdenum in the process. Please don't confuse Chrome-Moly with Chrome finish

What type of tubing should I use in the manufacture of my roll bar or cage?
All street roll bars are made with DOM. Race roll bars are made with DOM tubing for cars under 3500 pounds. 2" x .120" ERW is used for cars weighing over 3500 pounds. Street/Sport bars are made with DOM tubing. Roll cages are made with DOM tubing.

All true, but most recrational "play" buggies of the type we run are .095 wall 1.5 od erw. So anything more is a step in the right direction?

ive been talking with some dirt track drivers and they are saying they r using 083 dom for their entire frame.
i was going 2 use 095 but all the local steel companies seem 2 be out of it so im thinking of just going with 083.surely if its strong enough 4 a late model or modified race cars it should be enough 4 a buggy.??.
