Back in the late 90's I had the best gadget. I had a home made sensor on each wheel that worked on a separate lite that blinked as the tire turned and told me which wheel slipped or gripped. When I corrected the slipping wheel with the cut brake the buggy would move on.

What did you use? Pulse wheel sensors?

Nice....that's was an idea that I had but never implemented it. I was going to do if for my senior design in electrical engineering but picked a different project just to get done and my piece of paper. I thought about doing the light so the driver can manual do the traction control or making a full traction control that could be enabled and disabled where it automatically worked the steering brake.

How did you do yours?

I reread you post. I guess you just had a light connected to each sensor which blinked with the pulses and the driver just needed to visually determine which light was blinking faster.....nice and simple.

I was going to write code and use a micro controller that used the wheels sensor pulses and inputs and then illuminated the right LED when the right wheel was slipping and the left light when the left wheel was slipping.

You can also use embedded magnets
to give a hall effect signal to an Arduino
board. Here is a link to some code:
http://playground.arduino.cc/Code/HallEffect
The magnets may be more tolerant to
the dirt and water for offroad use? The
Arduino uses 5VDC through USB or plug.

I'd like to see someone improve it. How many times do you see a driver twist his head to see what his tires are doing. Or guess and pull the wrong tractor brake. I had a lot of fun with it back in the day. My 2 lites were mounted on the windshield arch. Maybe anti skid brake sensors will work.
