I have a 1997 EJ22 engine and 5 speed transmission, if I set up the combo mid-mount on my buggy and use the front wheel drive axle to drive the rear axles on my buggy, will that work fine or do I still need to do some work on the internals of the transmission? I was planning on building a metal box to hide the rear tranny output. Also does the tranny send 50%-50% output at the front-rear axles?

Depends on the tranny, awd or 2wd. Theres a diff in the rear of the awd trans that you need to address. Theres a block that can lock all the power to the front wheels only.

They sell the parts to do this. Great guys!

I heard nothing but good reviews about these guys but I was hoping to get some DIY information with some homebuilt parts or whatnot. Sounds like I will need their Subaspoon, and the plate would not hurt either. But that point I'll have about $500 invested and tons of fab work to do and an engine plate conversion is looking like a better deal. What do you guys think?

If you can find a 2wd trans it would work

The car I am building now will be the LAST VW trans I will ever use and the next one will have zero VW parts.
The only thing I would look into is the stock ring and pinion ratio. I think it's rather high something in the 3.??'s
Not sure if anyone makes a steeper ring and pinion for them, still worth looking into.
Keep this in mind, the prices on VW 6 ribs are always going up and their availability is going down. The price on Subie transmissions are not going up and they are plentiful. I would do what ever I had to do to make it work.

Finally, a DIY article on how to lock the awd tranny into fwd. I'll ad this to the list of things to do in this winter, lol.
