I was wondering if I could fab up some steering rods from 1" round tubing that has a wall thickness a little over 1/8" and use heim joints instead of paying about 40 bucks a piece for the passenger side tie rod ends. The drivers side is about 25 bucks apiece. If so would 5/8" shank with an ID hole of 5/8" be to good enough? There are made of chromoly steel. And i can get four for 45 bucks before shipping off of ebay. Just trying to save some money.

These hold up very good and have the threads in them, they're cheap and you don't have to make them.

I think when I bought mine for my old buggy with a stock gear box I had less than $100 total in 3 rods (bought 1 extra long one for back up but never used it in 3 years), 4 heims, and 4 high misalignment spacers. I used 5/8" heims with 5/8"to1/2" high misalignment spacers so I could just drill the tapered holes out to 1/2" and bolt it up.

They lasted 3+ years before I switched to a rack, and trust me I'm not gentle on my shit.

Haha i havent had a chance to realy abuse mine yet just got it running good and im in the middle of a disc brake swap. Did you use aluminum or steel rods?

Chromoly. I think the long ones where $21 each and the short $18 each.
