HI was wanting to know if anyone is running a front wheel drive engine and tranny out of a car in the rear of there buggy?? if so any pics? was wanting to build one for mostly street use. thought it would be cool  to have a 4 seater buggy with a ford front engine and automatic tranny setup in the rear THANKS

My dad is running a chevy citation and trans from out of a car. It s a four seater also. he runs it on the sand dunes. i will try to find some pictures and post them. |

Had a buddy do one with a chevy 3.1. The 2 problems are the cutters only worked on one side, due to the different axle lengths. And because of how wide the cv cups are appart you cannot get get as much travel. But for the street these two issues might not be a problem at all. |

HI sure would appreciate the pics! was going to unbolt the whole motor cradle and tranny and fab up some mounts on the frame and bolt it in. thinking about a FORD windstar auto tranny and motor since there a little higher ground clearence than a car, put some 31 0r 33 inch tires with offset rims and it should get it up there pretty good mostly be driving on the street anyways, i dont think it would be hard to do, just wanting to find out the aftermath before i start? getting the beeline 4 seater explorer chassis to start the builup on, will be using a 8 inch over warrior beam on front with coilovers and a rack and pinion setup THANKS |

HI not going to be running cutters and travel is not all that important since its going to be street driven. i know this may sound crazy but has any one run dual handle cutter brakes on the front wheels?? i know these things are light in the front end but i dont see why it wouldnt work? at the least you should get some awesome doughnuts anyways

Do like I did with the VW VR6 Passat. Use the whole motor and trans and run it long ways in the back seat. Weld the diff and run one VW bus axle back to a Ford 8.8 IRS rear end (321:1) out of a Continental or something.Then 930's down to the stub axles. It's a diff going into a diff, so you will have incredible perfect low gears. Read up on my old post TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT BUGGY. My trailing arms had to be different because it is in a 2 seater. |

Any idea if the contiental 8.8 is the same diff as the explorer/mustang/F150 diff? If so you could get all sorts of lockers for it including some selectable ones. There's one that is open when off and acts like a spool when locked. Another one is a limited slip when open and a spool when locked. |

As much as I like this setup in the woods, I think your top end would suck on the road. |

Hi Nitro. What's up? Don't forget it is a 5 speed. The VW Passt was made to do well over a hundred but 70 is plenty.Where are you ridin this week end? We've got a biggon at Fultondale.I always start off in 2nd.1st is for slow ugly stuff.800:1 2nd is 550:1 etc. I can't remember. |

Hey DD, heading to Wellsville for the weekend. At redline my 6rib with 33" tires should do around 150ish in 4th. Far beyond what I will ever need. But that still puts me at 3k or so rpm's for 70 to 75 mph. I imagine yours even in 5th would have to be 5k plus at highway speed. It may do it, but would you want to? Just think I would want higher gears for a street buggy. But I am still playing around with that for my next rail I build. |

If you do . Try an automatic. I bet that would be cool! Nite ridding is in order down here. It is getting hotter n hotter. If you get a beer out , you just about better chug it. I saw a cop chasing a robber and both of them were sitting on a park bench together taking a break.lol

Hi thanks for all the suggestions but i want too use a FORD engine and a front wheel drive tranny combo out of a windstar! this will see no woods strictly street. so low gearing is not needed and actually what i am trying to get away from. not to mention getting a way from a carb too! i like fuel injection its trouble free, i want something modern that i can cruise the interstate and be reliable and not sound like a airplane, and if something goes wrong i can pull into autozone and get the part, i would like to even drive maybe to other states to shows in this buggy. i really dont need all the other stuff. i have a street legal beeline cobra buggy i built now. with a vw 1915 engle 110 cam 044 outlaw heads, weber 44 mated to a 6 rib tranny she is wound out and tight and i am only going 50 mph! way too slow, but a ton of torque  , a front wheel drive set up should be perfect for me and should easily maintain highway speeds of at least 120mph or 140 mph and a lot less maintenance on the engine too and tranny too THANKS

I cant see a light weight windstar doing 120 for long periods. Just doesnt have the gearing for that without the motor reving pretty high. Taller tires will help that some though. But 80 going down the highway with some higher speed sprints as well should be no problem for it. Personally I'd look for a better performance engine, HP to weight ratio, but it will work I think. |

just kidding on the speed as long as i can get 75 to 85 mph without the motor sounding like it is flying apart that will be fine. i was going with the windstar front end because due to it being a van they are probally a little heavier built than a car, and performance wise we drove a rental windstar to canada with 6 people in it with fishing gear loaded down and let me tell you that thing would get up and fly! it would easily get away from the traffic and it loaded. very responsive on the gas pedal and got super good gas milage so putting one in a light weight buggy would be scary fast. THANKS

you could try a suby mid mount this would give you five speed efi and a high low range gearbox if you us the right one cheap on the fuel

HI is the subi 5 speed a automatic? dont want to have to use a clutch looking for auto. tired of shifting gears, gearing is not important as this will be a strictly street driven buggy also parts cost? most foreighn engines i seen takes a FAT wallet  went you buy parts looking to get away from expense besides that i can get everything i need for a windstar motor tranny cradle computor wire harness everything for 300 or 400 dollars at pic a parts and there readily available! as far as parts wise at autozone, they are not that high and for ford and they all are also EFI THANKS

With a fuel injected Small block and some gears it would be bad a$$. But it needs the gearing lowered in the woods. Stock would kill in the street as long as you don't live in PA
