Just got back from deployment number 5 and decided I was gonna get a new toy... here she is... I'm kinda leaning towards a diesel of some kind for a power plant.. I love the power my Cummins truck makes. I got a Manxish body I am trying to figure out how to put on it, I think it'll look good. Feel free to chime in and tell me what you think.

I found an 84 ford 4cyl from an escort, but am having a tricky time finding an adapter plate to go on the 091 I got. tryin to find a veedub diesel for it... I keep thinking about it and it makes my gas pedal foot want to stomp a little.

Kennedy said the only diesel plates they make are for VW. Are custom plates expensive?

welcome back home. I think it would be neat to do a vw diesel powered rail myself... the 2.0l "PD" TDI from a B5 Passat has 134 hp and 247 ft.lbs - (the 1.9's have 100hp and 174lf-lb) These are newer generation diesels that are common rail fed by a single high pressure pump and have electronic fuel injectors. They're drive-by-wire so there is a little more to them electrically than the single shut-off solenoid like on an old rabbit diesel but it would be the way to go, and I bet you can get your hands on one for the same price as a serious air-cooled engine. You wouldn't even need special adapters to go to a vw diesel, you can use vanagon diesel bellhousings, and the engine mounts would help to get it instaled. The vanagon diesel engines sit at a pretty extreme angle and have oil pans to match, so I don't think you would loose much ground clearance like with a subaru... you can get lots of vanagon diesel stuff via ebay - germany.

he is rite that motor would be cool, but you will have as much in that as a nice stroker,and with that diesel engine you will always be chasing the performance of the stroker! so why not go stroker? again my 2cents

I love a diesel motor for a work horse and a performance street engine, and hope I am never without a diesel truck. But a diesel is a turd offroad. At least on a buggy it is. Seen it myself. A High dollar build, too. Wont go nowhere.

Is that the big red one I saw at D&K a few years ago that sounded like a vacuum?

It's on a chain drive. It used to suck really bad, but he's getting his gearing and everything straightened out now. It's doing better, but it's just so dang heavy it won't ever go like it should to have probably over 50-60k in it.

seems like a little TDI would do really good ... wouldn't be too heavy on the trail. I know there are ways to get more horses out of em.. huh, might have to keep the disel for a later project.. like a mud racer or something?

will a 318 bolt up to the adapter plate for the 5.7L Hemi plate from Kennedy Engineering? I have a 318 sitting round.. I am a little partial to Mopar anyway. I know the 318 and the 360 both used the 727, I'm not sure about the Hemi though. Would make sense to use the same blocks for that.

I'm pretty new, but I think the formula for a buggy is power/weight ratio.

Less weight, more power.

That's what makes VW's so good, they are lite weight but have a lot of power, at least for their size.

Remember, you're only going to be pushing around a 1500-2500LB car, not to mention the motor is going to be mounted behind the rear wheels, which seem to act like a nice lever.
