 Post subject: Bryan's new mid travel

Here is what I have:
Berrien frame Sand Fox 4x 5 seater that is plus 6 inches wider and plus 3 inches taller. I also had Berrien add 2 inches to the rear cage. From there I had Dan Baudoux make the front and rear suspension. 4 x 2 on the front and 5 x 3 on the rear. For the engine, I put together a 2332 VW engine that should produce enough HP to keep up with the best of them. Hopefully the buggy will stand the test of time. If you have any questions or want a picture, please feel free to ask.

This is an electric power steering unit out of a 2008 Nissan Versa. I have spent 20 plus hours on trying to make this work. I will post any info if this is a go.

I am same one who sold you your frame. I have been watching your build for the past few weeks and I must say you have done a great job. If it ever rolls there is no way anything will bend. You did quite a bit more with it than I thought you would have. You have to be getting close to running or are you running now? Looks great!

We will be heading back next year. The last trip out there was one of the best we have ever had. Cain creek was 7 miles in 13 hours. Pritchett had a strom roll through that lasted a couple of hours and produced falls that dropped over our heads. Colorado as always was a great time.

After quite a long delay I have been able to make some progress. As some of you may have read I decided to sell the 2332 VW and went with an Ecotec 2.4L out of a 2006 Cobalt. The engine should put out about 190 hp. Even though I just had the transmission torn down and rebuilt it is back to the shop to have a Weddle super diff, spider gears, and a chromoly nut installed. The new tires and rims are in but I ordered another set for the rear to bring the wheel width in a bit, 88 inches was just a little wide for me. I sold the new front trailing arms to my brother because they fell short of the lengths I ordered. Instead of the 4 x 2 I ordered, I got 2 x 2 that only provided 12 3/4 inches of travel. With the 4 x 2 I am back to the 16 inches of travel I wanted. The rear trailing arms went back to the builder because when the welds cooled on the frame it drew the mounts in and left me with a 1/2 inch toe out. All of these set backs have delayed the build by 3 months. Truth be told I am glad they delays happened because it gave me enough time to do some research on the new engine. Here are a few pics of what’s new.

I cut out the 1" vertical support tube and installed a 1 1/2 tube a few inches back so my tie rods would clear. I also cut the horizontal tube out and installed a bent 1 1/2 tube so the tie rods would clear at full droop. I created a welded gusset on the bottom of the bent tube in the front and rear to make sure they would be just as strong as the original one piece tube. I added a 1" horizontal brace as added support. More than likely some of this is over kill but it sucks to have repairs on a powder coated frame. One inch of bump steer over the full length of travel. From the ride setting I should never have more than 1/2 inch of bump steer.
