Post subject:  Father and son buggy overhauls
Hi everyone, I am new to this website but my dad posted here years back with a few photos of his buggy. This year I finally hopped on board and picked up my own buggy. This winter we are doing some decently big changes to both of the buggies and figured I would try and post some photos along the way. We are from Alberta, Canada and have some amazing trail riding literally 30 minutes from our house. We have lots of big hills, mountains, trees and mud.

The red buggy is my dads, Its got a beefed up 6 rib with a Saturn 4 cylinder fuel injected engine. It has been the same for the most part for the last few years but this winter it is getting a whole new cage, front suspension and body panel's. Everything was done himself, all the bends, notches and design. Its all tacked up as you can see and ready to be welded up this winter. He is eliminating his front torsion's and putting on 10" fox air shocks. Most of the next few months will be spent on mine but I will post photos of his progress in the future.

The Green buggy is the one I just picked up. It came with a 2000cc VW bus engine and a 6 rib tranny which is a great start but with my dads buggy running a newer fuel injected engine this was clearly the direction to go for us. After finding a buyer or the VW engine i searched and searched for a 2.4L ecotec with little success, there doesent seem to be too many where we are from. I ended up picking up a 2006 saturn Ion for $400 and we pulled the 2.2L ecotec, computer and wiring harness from it. I ordered the adapter kit from Kennedy along with a whole new clutch. The only new parts in the photos are 33" tires i put on, otherwise everything is still untouched thus far.

This thread will likely be a mix of photos from both our buggies but I will try my best to make it clear which is which!

My old man is amazing at fabricating pretty much anything. As stated above he bent, notched and put this whole new cage together, it's been tacked for quite awhile now, he is going to start welding it up this winter whenever we aren't working on mine.

Got the ecotec and adapter bolted to the transaxle, sitting in the buggy ready to be solid mounted. Also received this new front axle - it came with 8 inch longer shock towers and the adjusters for the torsions, beats cutting my old current one up that's forsure!

Thanks Rick.

Figured I would keep posting once in awhile just in case there are still a few people on the site still. Got the ecotec/tranny solid mounted, fuel pump and regulator mounted, radiator from the Saturn ion mounted nicely behind the seats. The motor ended up fitting a lot better then we could have hoped for. We are currently working on the exhaust system and hooking up the rad hoses etc before we move onto the wiring!

Couple photos of the front trailing bars my dad has been working on for his buggy, he made up a jig with his old ones and extended these new ones. Next he has to move his shock towers slightly and mount his shocks and work on the rack on pinion set up.

yeah that sucks, i quite like this site, i was hoping it would still be more active.

Thanks! the mount is definitely not something I have seen before either but we wanted to make everything easily removable and its nice and strong. With the tranny mount as well it might be all we need, we may add some smaller mounts below on the skid plate tubing but it doesn't seem to need it!

Picked up some bends and my dad whipped up this sweet exhaust in no time. Simple but looks killer! It would have been easier to run the exhaust lower and out the back like lots of guys on this site but where we ride we can get some random deep water holes so we thought higher the better!

Thank you! and no these will just be for off road, we dont do tons of climbing like most guys on this site so these are just truck mud tires, I got a super good deal on them so i figured for now they will work. Ill eventually get some cut boggers down the road! We both have the 29" goodyear v treads for the fronts on the way though!

Thank you Rick I appreciate it! Yeah i was hoping to have it inside the cage but like I said we wanted it to come out fairly high so it wasent much of an option, we generally dont ride to crazy so hopefully it lasts haha

Well we finally got the ecotec fired up and running! we had a small issue with the computer, it would start and run for a few seconds and die for no reason. After this we did some research and realized the 2005-2006 saturn ion 2.2L ecotecs are pretty much the only engine that have not been cracked yet and you cant get a tune for them to delete anything so we thought we were screwed. Did some more research and hooked up the factory ignition and body control module and ran a couple wires to the computer and thank goodness it worked! engine runs great and everything seems to be good to go. Now a few hours of cleaning up the wiring and making it nice and onto some more rear end brackets etc before we start on the front suspension!

Picked up my shocks this week, always heard great things about bilstein's and I like how they are finished, seem like high quality shocks, plus they came in 35" for the rear with 14" of travel which was nice. Got fronts and rears to match.

Post subject:  front end and pedals
Got the new front torsion/beam in with some 29" Goodyear v treads and new bilstein shocks. My old man straightened up and welded up some brackets for the trailing arms. Also got the new pedal assembly bolted down and a bracket for the electric gas pedal. My rear hubs were way to big for any rotor I found so they are getting machines down so the rotors slide right on. Picked up 3/8" Audi A5 rotors and 1990 Sentra calipers, so once I get the hubs back from machining that will be next! Almost there, lots of little stuff yet but it's getting close!

Well my buggy is finally all completed and we even took it out in the snow for some testing and everything ran great, the little 2.2 ecotec makes some nice power. Really looking forward to the summer. We are parking mine for the winter now and my dad is going to start his. He loved the ecotec so picked up a 2.4L for his, lots of updates and photos of his will be posted next month or so.

Yeah i think so, ive heard nothing but good things about them - plus they look pretty nice and came in a lot of length options which made it a no brainer!

Well my dad has his buggy pretty much stripped - he is changing pretty much everything, he picked up a 2.4L ecotec and plans on going turbocharged (probably not this year though due to lack of time before the riding season starts up again) front end is going to have extended trailing arms, fox air shocks with power steering and 30" Goodyear v treads. The rear he plans on going to airbags with 3x3 trailing arms. More updates eventually!
