My dad and I are in the idea stage of a mini buggy for him we are thinking of using vw beam way narrowed and custom narrowed torsion with vw IRS . has any one heard of narrowing a beam 8-10 inch's and making a chain drive spool for the IRS axles

I.m.o. you are describing a "UTV":

If the roll cages were more substantial,
these machines could be considered
fairly "safe". Unfortunately adding more
steel makes a narrow, short frame have
a high center of gravity which effects
stability.

There are WAY better ways of doing this. VW is definitely not what you want to start with.

VW is still not cheap .You may have one to start with now but when you base what you build on that and it tears up you have to go and search for replacement parts ,,,Thats when it becomes pricey

Plenty of bike motor/trans out there in people's back yards. Even a 25 year old 750 motor would be more horsepower and less weight than a budget VW. Plus it's narrow, has a close ratio bump shift 5 or 6 speed and almost unlimited gear combos.

That's basically what were thinking building a chain drive carrier to run the vw axles off of

Look up Protodie if you go that route. Can't beat a gsxr buggy IMO

Chain drive would be easy as would gear ratio changes. . My Idea is to build one like Passatman. Mine would have 1.8t passat engine and 5 speed automatic, would have the diff welded turned sideways feeding two small diffs (Nissan R180), Nissan front hubs front and rear, shortened oem axles, front locking hubs off a Nissan. Front Lincoln locked front and rear. (Nissan because ARB offers lockers but that negates being cheap). This could be built fairly cheap. Trans ratios 1-5 3.77, 2.00, 1.41, 1.00 .74 Reverse 4.1 diff 3.67 Nissan truck 4.10 gives you 58.28 to 1 reduction in first gear. 4 mph at 1700 rpms 1st gear to 10 mph at 4300 rpms, 65 at 4200 rpms 5th gear. I think this could be built for under 2000 to 2500 with all used parts and new tubing. 800 for a well used Passat, 400 for used Nisaan parts. build it with a 3.0 Nissan and it would be crazy quick.

I like it. Anything new/home brewed is a win to me. Speaking of crazy quick.... Where is passat lately??? It gets boring without him and his "random acts of wisdom".....

I see your bound and determined to run VW stuff on this Mini Buggy. I would really reconsider this approch. As it has been said a Bike motor would be a much better route along with an "A" arm front end . You can buy used Quad and or UTV parts fairly cheap off of Ebay. You would end up with a light weight, fast and nimble machine instead of a tank! Go to this website before you make your decision. This is the best Minibuggy site going. Not to mention its owned by a good friend of mine lol.
