I'm going to set my Flywheel End Play on my VW 1800 engine and I'm new at this game, and I'm going off of what I've read. Is it true you MUST use 3 shims to set the play between 4 to 6 thousands. If it's true I can't see why you must use 3. Its my first rebuild and I'm trying to do it wright. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

You will more than likely use more than three unless you have a large collection. I use to have two dozen but they went with all my all my air cooled stuff years ago Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

OK, so it is ok to use as many as it takes because I have about 70 thousands to eliminate and it's going to take more than 3 for sure. Thanks Red Barron Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

This topic of "how many shims" was debated on Samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=300053 I have taken apart at least 50 ea. type 1 engines and never saw more than 3 shims. Unfortunately this means little. If you are using aftermarket cranks and/ or flywheels and one or both is not machined to OEM specifications, then you either have to use more than 3 shims or get the flywheel counterbore machined deeper. Be sure to torque to 250 ft.lb. before measuring. Be sure than the mating surfaces are flat and free of burrs and ridges. |

Thanks jimp, I checked out that link and it was a good debate. I think I'll use 4 shims if need be. And yes it is a AFTERMARKET CRANK. I don't think I'll get it wright the first time, is it Better to leave the O ring and seal off until I know that I get it wright. Also is it OK to torque the gland nut then loosen several times, I read don't do that. And also if have to take the flywheel off to add a shim, will it come off easy or hard. Thank You Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Yeah, don't do that with the gland nut. Use a gland nut that is scrap and then use a new one for final build if possible. The flywheel should not be hard to pop on and off. Don't do any of this with the main seal in place. |

I do have 2 new gland nuts and zero old gland nuts, I hate to sacrifice one for that purpose but I guess I'll have to. Thanks for your help. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
