Well figure I would give you guys an update. Got my 94mm rings for the buggy ready to put in the weekend after Christmas.

Last time I rode my Buggy my trans, was making a sort of whining sound on the decelerations, so since the buggys going to be in the shop getting picked apart cleaned and put back together with new parts. What do you guys think is the best transmission for a 2165cc?

I was told the 6 rib I have know was "built" but he couldn't tell me what it was built with and also it was just "gone through" along with the engine in spring. And I'm already having to replace rings and now my trans is whining when I let of the gas...

Sooo My question is what do you guys prefer as far as transmissions go? I do a lot of woods riding and use my cutter brakes a lot. Plus I got a stroker motor on it so whatever I do it has to be reliable. I heard the subarus have good trans and I even heard Porsches are good transmissions for buggies to. (Keeping and rebuilding my 6 rib is not out of the question) What do you think?

Your 6 rib should be fine. Call Chuck Jones and have him rebuild your trans and upgrade to weddle gears with a german super diff.

I ran a mild 2165 for several years against a 5 rib and 36" buckshots... it was a really good combo

The Subaru would work also. there are certain ones that you need. The Subaru would have to have a reverse cut ring and pinion gear. they block the 4wd diff and gears to make it a 2wd trans. In stock form they will hold 280hp. With aftermarket gears they can handle 650hp.

I know we have talked a lot about the Subaru Transmissions and I am very interested in one. However, I have not seen one with 35 inch tires yet. I keep trying to find someone who has actually used one off road.

will be building a Mid engine turbo Ecotec with a Subaru Trans in it putting all the info together right now build will start in a couple months. The buggy will be ran in sand.

Here is an interesting post from SubaruGears...

Subarugears Hi Jarrad, the 195kw 1uzfe won't be an issue in itself but combined with high speeds and say 33in or 35in mud tyres this will put massive strain on the pinion and likely destroy it quickly. Subaru ring and pinions are smaller because the torque is usually shared between the two of them in an AWD setup. I have seen a mid mount buggy with ej25 (170hp) and standard Subaru 5 speed locked into 2wd race very well with 33's in the sand. Then he hit some whoop dee doos at over 100mph and the strain of the jumps and landings destroyed the pinion teeth. He went to a Weddle box with its much much larger ring and pinion.

that is interesting. they have different gears ratios they can install for different size tires as long as you tell them everything that you are doing. I have seen Mendolia transmissions explode before also. Lets face the facts no matter what you by it will brake eventually. There are alot of guys on the west coast using the Subaru trans.

We're still comparing, or at least trying to compare two different animals. I hammered on my last car pretty hard and I can't recall hitting any whoop-dee-doos at over 100mph, maybe 50 or 60, but not 100. How much did that car weight that ate a pinion? And sure as heck he wasn't running at 100mph with a 4.86 R&P, I can see a set of 3.55's not liking jumps but 4.86???
Next thing to consider is the Subie trans raises the motor up one inch and moves it an inch forward. I'm thinking we might not need to run 35" tyres :roll:

Someone needs to pony up and get one of these, let us know how it works out.

Where can I get a Subaru trans? I talked to chuck jones. Definitely a cool dude! But I would like to see how much one if these subarus would cost. Does anybody have a link?

Read everything, look at everything. I would be inclined to install the reversed gears myself, save $$$$

start looking in salvage yards. Found a trans out of Impreza that they wanted 650.00. the up grades that you need to do to the trans look like you could do them yourself. There are certain trans that are better than other ones. Subarugears site tells you which trans to get.

Holy crap! Thousands of dollars for one of these transmissions if I went this route I would definitely buy one from a junkyard and build it myself save yourself a lot of money that way.

No bus box going to take very much of 650hp and as far as I'm concerned, 280hp on a Weddled' out bus box is just a matter of when and where.
So there is an advantage, it just costs. I hate to see what all aftermarket gears and stuff would cost on top of everything else. I wonder how close to in cost it is to a $6400 Mendeola MD4E?

I was talking about a 6 rib that will handle 300hp is going to be comparable to the Subaru in stock form in price. I know all the benefits of this trans and will give it a chance on my next build like I said in my first post. Most people on here can't see past that wonderful VW so I was making a comparison.

So can the suby transmission be ran mid engine in stock form or is that bassackwards
