What do you think, should I buy? It is $800. Owner says it has bad rings. Started burning oil and lost compression. Doesn't have starter, but has extra transaxle. I am trying to get more details. I really appreciate the help!

At this price can I go wrong? What all should I look for? I've owned a buggy for a few years and know a little about them like how to check crankshaft end play and look at valves, but are there any major problems I should watch out for? Thanks again for any input, please share your thoughts

The major problems are the one we all have. We are all into buggies. For the money I do it. It looks good and runs. If its what your looking for do it. Most any buggy is going to need some work. I would say any one asking 2k or less knows it's time for a rebuilt. Good luck

Aside from running into to many expensive issues trying to get it running my other concern is headroom. My current buggy scares me because there is barely any headroom. This one doesn't look much better, but I was wondering if it would be feasible to cut off the top and weld in a couple new roll bars. How expensive would that be to do it right?

cut it and raise the roof, tons of people do it and gives you the opportunity to brace it up correctly

I don't have the welding experience to do that myself. Roughly how much would labor and materials cost to put a higher roof on with good bracing?

I am always happy to see people get back into buggies but I cannot always say an $800 buggy is the best starting point.

So far, it sounds like the engine is blown and the frame does not fit you. What else can you tell us about the buggy?

I am guessing drum brakes, do they work at all? How is the steering? Does if have a swing axle trans? Is the front link pin shock towers rusted out or in good shape? Are the seats usable? Gas tank usable? Does the starter and alternator work?

I would hate for you to buy a buggy and then not have the money to make it trail worthy.

if you just want something to run around the yard it might be an ok deal if you can do basic work to it yourself....if you want to hit the woods and see something other than the main trail then i would look for something a little more stout, and running. best deal is find one someones already done the basic upgrades to( trailing arms,shocks,motor,bus trans, etc) and build on it how you want it from there. i bought mine running for 2300 1641,3 rib,disk on rear with cutters,etc. then spent 10k to make it mine hahahahah. see build thread on here bige70chevy buggy

The seller is apparently not very interested in selling because he has not given me any additional info. However, I decided it is probably not the best decision to buy anyway when I have a buggy now that needs work. I've got the motor out now and will soon start my first rebuild. Thanks for the input guys.
