Tabs and such can get expensive so try to find a place or a person to buy them in bulk. I think Instigator a sponsor water jets them. I would brace your rear roll bar hoop before finish paint goes on. These things have a habit of rolling over.

I sent him an email, we'll see what he says.

Yep, that's a nail. I guess you use what you have to get the job done.

OK, I think I have a decent shopping list for now:

Light tabs
Seat belt tabs
CV Boots (at least, might need cv joints eventually)
Extra CV bolts
CV Grease
Rear wheel bearings
Brake lines from m/c to rear hubs
wheel studs and lug nuts for switching out the adapters back to 4 lug one day
Head lights
Tail lights
Turn signals
horn
wiring
mirrors - I might have some motorcycle mirrors I can make work for the sides
rear tire(s) - one of them has a spot where it was ground/shaved flat. Maybe an emergency stop?

And probably a lot of stuff I'm overlooking.

Headed north on 65 to get some parts from holeman and NRIbuggys and visit for a bit. Will be good to meet some folks in person finally.

Great meeting you guys too. Thanks for the parts. I got everything unloaded and started cleaning the trans and some of the other stuff. Tomorrow afternoon, we'll really get to work.

Well, I waited as long as I could. Old trans is out. Now to put the wheel back on so I can roll it out, clean it up, and paint the rear arms and torsion.

The old:

The new:

The side covers (or whatever they are called) are bigger on the new one. Also, there is a sleeve around the input shaft. Also, the input shaft is a little different. Is this all going to be ok? I know I have to drill some different mounting holes for the front mount. The old were side by side, the new ones are staggered.

The new one after a good cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. Also installed a new starter bushing and the new starter.

I know I'm supposed to be putting together, not taking apart, but I really wanted to pull the front off.

Image

Why? Because this was one of the bolts holding it on. I guess if the bolt is too long, just get more washers.

And I need to fix these welds, or lack thereof:

Plus, I can get into these areas better now to get them painted.

the painted one is a late model and the one you took out is an early model

I just can't catch a break. The old one has a new clutch, pressure plate and t/o bearing. Am I going to have to buy all that stuff for the new one? If so, I may just have to live with the old one for now and hope reverse holds up for a little while.

Kris, The new trans is actually older than the one you are taking out. That is ok since it will be most likely a 412 ring and pinion. Look at the numbers on the old write them down and PM me if it is a 3:88 Ring and pinion then I may have a buyer. If not then bring it to me and I will fix the reverse and you will have a back up trans. Glad to see your making progress.

Will do. I'm kind of at a stand still until it quits raining. I may do some grinding and break out the new welder tomorrow.

Supposed to be picking this up on Tuesday. Supposedly a good running bug until he pulled the engine and found the engine case was bad. Getting it for scrap price. Hopefully I can scavenge some good parts and the scrap it. Or maybe a baja?

This is worse than motorcycles!

straight beetle for scrap price  looks like a super beetle, if so they have strut front ends that are junk in the woods. would be an easy quick flip to someone looking for a project beetle

Supposed to be a 69, but we'll see. The stuff I am looking for doesn't matter if it's a super or not. I would like to have another beam, but it's not that big of a deal if it turns out to be a later super. I mostly want the engine parts and a few other things. Floors are shot, probably rusted out elsewhere, but the price is right. Just wish it was closer. I DID average 14 mpg on my trip Saturday!

Sent pics of the numbers I found. Let me know what else you need from it.

The AT in the case number designates that this is trans has the Highway 3:88 ring and pinion. This trans has the stronger 12 tooth spider gears and the strongest 1 & 2 of any of the car transmissions. Reverse is an easy fix so long as the trans doesn't jump out of any gears. The draw back is that it is a tall gear for a small VW engine. These were known as the freeway flyer trans.

The new trans you got is most likely a 4:12 Ring and pinion. Again given the case numbers I can tell you for sure.

So I should have fixed the one I had instead of buying the other one? The price was right on the black one, so even if its just a temporary trans or spare, I'm still good with it. I will be mostly street driving this one for now, in town. Stick with the 412 or go ahead and swap to the 388 and keep the 412 for the woods?

if you intend on running the tranny with the nose cone around the shaft you'll have to get a different pressure plate as well, but you can still use the clutch disc
