There are bunch of places and clubs around here that require 4 wheel drive. Thought I would try something a little bit different. My goal is to modify my existing buggy and keep the look and feel. I do not want to compromise the raw performance of a woodsbuggy.

This is just the very beginning.. I am going to collect parts this summer and build it next winter but I wanted to get some input on my thoughts...

Transmission:
Picking up a Syncro Transmission next week - Basically, an 091 with a front shaft coming out of the nose cone. It will take some modification to make it fit but my bell housing and clutch should bolt right up.

Engine
My 2276 runs great. If it blows up in the future, maybe I will go Subaru..

Front Differential
I am thinking about using a front differential out of a Polariz RZR. The gearing works out perfectly to run my 5.9X15 dog house tires in the front and my Q Buckshots in the rear.

Front Spindle and Axles
If I use the Front Diff out of a Polaris, It would be easy to use the Axles, Spindles and Brakes from a Polaris as well. There are tons of aftermarket parts for the Polaris.

Take a look at the rear Visco lock differential out of a Subaru. You could also use the axels, CVs, Hubs etc. Would be a lot stronger than RZR parts.

Sounds Like I am going to be changing my plans... Let me research some more on Subaru stuff.. My biggest question is the front suspension and spindles. The rear diff will work great.

i love this idea. I've thought of a similar setup but mine was an ecotec and t5 5spd in the back like a bug mtr but with a small transfer case bolted to the t5 with small diffs front and rear. looking forward to see yours go together.

A company over here in the UK used to make a 4wd rail for Special Forces, called the Longline LSV, used nearly all Vanagon (T25) running gear etc.. that worked well

I thought I would post an update on my 4x4 project.

I now have most of the major parts..

I got a 094 Trans. Basically an 091 with a front output shaft. I was also able to confirm that my trans is a 4:86..

This weekend, (thanks to Firebug) I was able to get the diff for the front, axles and A-Arms from a Subaru SVX.

I will not start any fabrication until the winter but I will keep collecting the parts throughout the summer.

also on that tranny,,,if I'm not mistaken the first gear is lower making it even more ideal for your application,. good luck

I am not sure what a normal 6 rib is but here is the gearing for the syncro I have
3,78 - 1st gear
2,06 - 2nd gear
1,23 - 3rd gear
0,85 - 4th gear

Will it be full time 4 wheel drive or will you be able to select between 2 or 4 wheel drive ?

I was thinking it was the 5 speed version. still a great tranny

Thats the rear diff from a suby so you are turning it upside down to use as a front diff correct? Will the pinion bearings stay correctly lubed with the assembly upside down? Looking VERY forward to this build

The pinion bearing is one of my concerns about flipping the diff. The ring gear will bring some lubrication but I do not think it will pull enough. As for now, I am thinking about running a small electirc fuel pump with two fitting and pumping the fluid to the top of the diff.

Anyone know if this is a AWD or full time 4WD transmission? If it is AWD I am affraid the frons will just spin away all the power. I doubt that is the issue. And dan it would be nice if you could find a inline (front driveshaft) way of disengaging the front wheels, not sure if anything exist.

Why not just run the diff in the front the right way and not upside down so that it gets oiled properly. I would just be like running the suby in reverse all the time. May not be as stong for the the ring and pinion but for the weight of a buggy I do not think it would heart since I am sure you would not run it in 4wd all the time. Just a thought.

Typically if you put a front axle in the rear you have to flip it for it to run the right direction.

I actually found an air actuated De-coupler that bolts onto the nose cone of the Transmission and will lock and unlock the front driveshaft on the fly. However, the front differential and axles will still be spinning, just not engaged.
