Got most of my fuel system gathered up. Primary filter (100 micron) fuel pump and secondary filter (10 micron)

Got a start on my stainless steel dash with digital gauges. Not to excited on how it's coming out so far.
Image

Got is way cool billet aluminum Jamar fuel pedal.
Image

And finally I got stuff back from powder coat, not sure which spindles I'm going to use so I had both set done.

The old fuel cell filler plate and cap.

My rear shocks landed as well. They are FOA 2.5 remote res. 14" stroke with 7/8" shafts. These things are huge.

Like the hammer flake on the trailing arms, it should make the stone chips less noticeable

When I get it finished I plan on several Rush trips, perhaps then.

Got the dash finished minus a couple of idiot lights for low oil pressure and alternator.

Spaghetti anyone? Small car performance did the wiring harness and the re flash on the ECU only because they are the only ones I could find that could do the reflash. They only do the harness one way, to work on a VW van conversion. If the harness works for you, fine if not, too bad. So I had to take what they did and modify it to work in the Funco. I relocated the relays and fuses to a better location, something easier to get to. Lots more to go, hope you enjoy.

I didn't HAVE to change anything, I chose to. If I would have left it the way Small Car did it the ECU and the relays would have been under the fuel cell behind the seat, not a good place to fix something. And yes I'll agree that all this wiring can be intimidating at first, just like anything else, we fear what we don't understand or grasp. I will be finished with the bulk of the wiring in the next couple of days, once I'm done, if it's anything like my last car, I will never deal with it again.

What do you plan to use the funco fill plate for? Looking great!

All the original Funco's had their fuel cell(s) in the side pods along side the driver. There is a company that makes the fuel sells, but they can keep it for almost 1K, so the filler plate now is something like a hood ornament that plugs a big hole. It also could be said that a Funco fuel plate "authenticates" the car is indeed a Funco.

My biggest hold up are the rear trailing arm bearing houses, I can't get them. I need to build my rear trailing arms so I can fab up the rear upper shock mounts. Once that's finished it's time to go to powder coat, chassis is finished. With the exception of a built trans, I have everything else to finish the car.

The fiberglass is ready for paint, I need to get my head checked, I was actually doing body work, I hate body work. If you would've told me 10 years ago I would be doing body work on a buggy today, I would have laughed you out of the room.

One of these days I'm going to finish this thing.

Have you considered going with a micro stub set-up instead of the conventional bearing housing trailing arms?

I have no first hand experience with the micro stub set up. I do understand the concept and I feel they would not last very long riding Wellsville. The micro stub, the way I understand, is simply a shorter stub axle and bearing housing that moves the inboard and outboard bearings closer together. I feel that the closer the bearings are the less radial strength, or the greater the bearing load would be in that assembly.

I really don't need any more wheel travel then I'll get with a 4X5 arms and 37 degree half shafts and until someone can show me a major advantage, I'm not willing to loose strength and durability for a little more wheel travel.

Mike , I have had great luck so far with Dave's setup . Durable and easy to get parts if you have to repair .
I'm guessing you have already seen the setup but just wanted to make sure .
Keep up the good work !

They have held up on my heavy ass buggy. I jump it, do at speed pavement spins, hard cornering, hit every bump and rut I can, etc. And I love them. Plus everything is modular. Need a new rotor, it unbolts from hub. Need a new hub, it unbolts from inner hub, and that unbolts from front wheel drive style sealed bearing. They are honestly one of the few "race" parts I have purchased that I feel I got something for my money that will last. I have about 10k miles of street and trails on them so far. Besides Mike. Once you buy a set you can reverse engineer them and have another thing to sell the rest of us..... Mad Mikes Micro Stubs does have a nice ring to it.... ;-)

If I didn't go through all the time and expense to build my rear hubs I might consider them. I still feel that the new bearing housings that I'm using (when I can get them), they allow you to run the equivalent of two inboard and two stock outboard bearings, is the strongest we can get.
I'm giving the guy that makes them for me to the end of the month to get a pair to me or I'm going to have to make my own. Sucks though, it will take me 2 full days to make a pair of them plus the $100 in alloy material to make them with, I'll have $750 in making two housings. Before, I made a phone call and 4 days later I had a box full of them for a lot lot less.
As always, thanks for the feedback.

Any luck getting those bearing housings yet? Hopefully you won't have to fab a set.

As a matter of fact my supplier came through for me. I should now have an unlimited supply of double bearing bearing housings. I'm hoping to have a set this week so I can begin to fab up my new trailing arms. Maybe now I can finish this thing.

Does the double bearing eliminate the spacer or do you have to run a cut down one still? It is definitely a clever idea to add strength.

The "new" style bearing housing uses a 5206 inboard bearing which is a double row sealed thrust bearing then I cut the center spacer down to size. It uses two stock bearings on the out side.
Since the inboard bearing is sealed itself, along with the factory seal, that should eliminate any water incursion into the bearing and with two outer bearings it's over twice as strong as a stock set up.

This thread has been fascinating in that it brought back memories of when I was 21 y/o and building my Funco SS1 for racing in southern CA. Your work is impeccable!!
