Heading out in a few hours to pick my newest toy up. Its an 86 fiero on its way to being a woodsbuggy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It still needs alot of work from me to make it capable out in the woods. Hopefully this type of buggy will be accepted here and I can find some pointers on where to go with it. Ive been in 4x4 rigs for nearly 10 years ever had any 2wder before. I obvioulsy know I need to do something for ground clearance and tires, and maybe some cutting brakes aside from there no idea where to begin for offroad capabilities. |

I am looking into adding a little bit of suspension lift to it. Already order some wheel adpaters to get me to ford ranger/ jeep bolt pattern so I can run put the 235-75-15 dessert dawg tires I have on ranger wheels on the back. Still need to find something for the front. |

Im debating right now on pulling the carrier out of the trans and welding it ( no lockers out there for it), or trying to fab up cutting brakes using the ebrake cables ( it has rear disc with ebrake equipped calipers) I know the pros and cons of both my question is which one truley helps out the most in a rear engined buggy? I come from the 4x4 world and we lock both ends and call it a day and make 8 point turns if we have to. |

Welcome to the site! Absolutely... the cutting brake. I would try to run them hydraulic though. Cable might be harder to pull/hold and have more travel in the handle. Also, IDK about the Fiero, but on some cars the E brake only applies a couple small shoes which rub on the inside of the rear disc hub, like a small drum brake system inside your rear rotors. not much stopping power. Very cool rig! I heard there were some folks running those with really good success. |

The fiero cable moves the entire caliper piston in so you get the same brake applied as when hitting the pedal, you just have to pull ti hard ot get the same pressure I am sure. I run my 2wd ranger tough truck welded with steerign brakes up front and it seems to do fine on the track, but thats not out in the woods. Heck it turns so good I rooled it over making a slick corner thursday. However cable powered cuttign brakes on the fiero will be very easy to do I just need to get another brake lever and main cable to amek it work. I will try that route and see how I like it. If I feel later on I need more pressure and can justify the exspence of hydraulic Ill go that route, plus I need working emergancy brakes to pass the inspection to get the rebuilt title for it so I can tag it. |
