You did an awesome job, the frame looks great. I love the blue! I almost went with blue but they couldn't get the blue powdercoat I wanted.

Thanks, I had considered going with powdercoat but figured I would probably have to do some repairs to the frame. So it will just be a whole lot easier with paint. I feel safe enough to ease into some hardcore stuff, but Im pretty sure I will have a few welds cracking :(

Got the body painted today and put back on the frame. Painted it flat black epoxy primer/sealer. Forgot the camera so I didnt get any pics but I should have some tomorrow when we use up the last of the blue I have putting on some flames.

Heres a couple shots of the body in flat black. Its not as flat as I had wanted so Im hoping it flattens out as it dries.

We were taping off for the flames and the blue with black flames looked so good I almost considered changing colors. I found out later never to use any of that blue tape if has been sitting for a while out of the packing. It ended up leaving alot of glue on the car when we pulled it

Here it is done. Im probably gonna get some of that silver pinstripping tape to trim it out in. It didnt turn out quite as well as I would have liked, but oh well, good enough for what it is going to go through.

Looks awesome, FL!!

After a few days in that Florida sun that epoxy will flatten right out. Will even chaulk up if you leave it outside much. Keep your masking tape in the fridge and it will stay in better shape if you think it will be a while before you use it. Is that blue tape the hardware store "3M painters tape"? If so, it would have left glue on that primer even if it was brand new. If you do any more of that type of work, try the 3M green tape. Its less gummy and designed for automotive work. Its about $9 a roll for 1 1/2", (maybe more if you just buy a couple rolls,we get it by the case) but worth it. The bodyshop I work for switched to it two years ago, and now we wonder how we ever worked with the old stuff!

Thanks! And yes, that was 3M Painters tape from Walmart. The new rolls that I bought the day before we did this did leave a very little bit of glue on the car.
What do you think would be the best way to get it off (sounds funny  ) ? I was probably gonna wait about a week to wash it. Would that be ok? And a friend suggested leaving it out in the sun for a couple hours before I washed it to heat the glue up.

I'd say it would be safe to wash it now as long as you mixed the primer right, and I'd say you did or you'd pay hell gettin as much tape off as you did!
If the primer is fairly slick, I'd just roll off the glue with your fingertips, or wash it pretty hard. I dont know about leaving it out in the sun. It always seemed like any kind of weather, rain or sun, would make tape problems worse when we had them.

Thanks! It looks better from a distance than it does up close, but still not bad. Im sure a paint and bodyman would pick it apart but not too bad for some rookies in a dirty garage :D
I definately plan on it being street legal. From talking to a few people I dont think it will be too hard here. Im going for an "assembled from parts" title.
Larry, thanks for the info on the glue removal. It ended up not being too much of a pain.

Heres a few pics after the pinstriping. Originally I was going to try and pinstripe it with some of the leftover silver paint from the suspension. Luckily, common sense took over and I got some silver pinstriping tape. About 100 feet later it was done. All I can say is my god Im glad that is done!

WOW!! Personally, I don't think I would take that into the woods to just beat it up. That is way too nice.

Thanks! A friend of mine suggested that we take it somewhere cool to take a bunch of pictures of it as soon as it is done. Cause it wont look that way for long

Make sure you do your "photo shoot" before you actually use the thing. I sure am glad I did. I have some great shots of my buggy when it was first completed. It will never look that good ever again.
Then go beat the crap out of it. That's what you built it for.........

I got the shift rod built today. Seems to shift pretty good. Also started putting the door panels on.

I have decided not to make the baja street legal. I started doing some checking into it after reading something on another site, and it is going to be a big pain in the a$$. Not to mention the extra cost. Not counting the extra parts I have to buy to make it street legal, I will probably have to spend another $2500 to get all the things done to put a tag on it.
Probably for the better anyway. Now I dont have to worry about breaking down out in the woods by myself. I will always have a tow vehicle.

Its back to being street legal again. Decided that since the area with the VIN plate has been cut off the body, I am going to use a title and VIN off another bug and mount it to the cage right by the windshield. That should get me legal real easy, and not so much money. I know, "Make up your damn mind!"

I took the body back off today. Got the floor completely mounted, and the pedals in. Also got the shift rod in. Hopefully the seats will go in tomorrow. And I hope to be able to get the diamond plate this weekend so I can start on my wiring.

I have a feeling that when you finish it there is going to be a crowd at your first ride. I know I want to see it.

The first ride will probably be pretty mellow. I wanna do a little testing on the frame to see how well it will hold up. Im pretty sure its going to be ok, but know the guy that built the frame  It looks pretty but Ive never been able to truly test any of my welds.
Gonna run it through some whoops pretty hard. Try to launch the front end comin out of a ditch and see how well it takes the impact. Then probably jump it a few times. Basically beat on it to see if I can get something to break without risking serious damage to myself.
Then bring it back to the warehouse and pull it apart and check for damage. This is where I will be kicking myself in the ass for bondoing the joints.
If everything comes out ok....."its on baby!!"
