is there a way of running a radiator behind the driver that is safe because it just seems sort of dangerous to me but i like the idea of water cooled because it seems more reliable but i'm just a little freaked out by the hot water.I'm sure u guys know a way around it, any ideas and thanks.

I dont run a thermastat in mine, so it doesnt get that hot. But all you need to do is build a plate on the front side with a set of side scoops or something so if it blows it cant spray at u.

That was one of the major reasons I did not go with a Water Cooled. I was not crazy about putting the Radiator behind my kids head. I have seen a few radiators placed behind the engine that look very safe.

Well, whats worse ,most people run a gas tank behind them.....I run my radiator behind my gas tank, because the cooling fan blows on the engine too....I never run more than 140 degrees.....just sayin..

Running without it will drive the computer sensors nuts. It will run the richer warmup settings till the sensor reads around 160 degrees I think. In cool weather its possible the engine may stay below 140 degrees without a thermostat. Most computerized engines run about 195 deg.


Search Ebay for aluminum 2 core Del Sol radiators. They are cheap, small & fit anywhere. I will run 2 of them to cool my Pinto engine.

If you start off with a good radiator you'll never have any problems. I have never seen a radiator rupture, anytime there is a failure it involves the hose or hose connection. I use silicone hose and good band clamps with mine, no problems.

you dont need a thermostat in a buggy. All the aftermarket off road water necks for the ecotec dont have thermostats. They run at normal temp, still get good gas mileage and when hill climbing really helps keep everything cool.

Mine is located behind the gas tank. Also I have my temp gauge where I can see it out of the corner of my eye just to keep an eye on it.

The quad 4 is known to warp the aluminum heads when it overheats. And this eliminates the problem. She runs from 130 - 160. It idles high untill about 100 degrees then drops down. I have a thermastat for it, but didn't put it in because it seems fine without it, i just warm it up a bit when it is cold out. Better then warping the heads or having to stop and cool down. I guess its the lesser of 2 evils

Mount it in a wing, They look cool and work great

Not sure how to keep the trees out of it there, or save it in a rollover. Works fine in the sand.

I pondered the Ideal of putting the radiator behind me in the cockpit however I did not like the Ideal of having an Oven in my back seat when it is 90 degrees outside. I also use a restrictor plate in place of the thermostat to slow the flow rate down. This helps maintain temperature and to not over cool the motor. Motors are designed to work well within a given Temperature range.

I have never seen one mounted in a wing. I have seen air filters and intercoolers mounted there. But never a radiator. Where did you see this? It would also be expensive as hell. One I build wings for maybe bottom dollar 300 bucks. With NOTHING in it. You would have to have a custom radiator built or get crazy lucky to find one that is long and skinny but thick to fit in a wing truck area. On top of that making some sort of fan or housing to help with cooling somewhere in the middle of all that. Id love to see where you saw this and how it worked. The cars I have stood next to out in cali with the air filter wings where $125K+ cars...

A jeep cherokee radiator would be a good cheep stock candidate.

Anyone know where i can find a lower temp radiator? The one I have is 180, i would put one in if i could find a 140 degree. I had the same engine that I run and it would get hot real fast when sitting still on hot days in chicago traffic. That is the reason I am leary of using the stock 180deg radiator.

I run a thermostat always. But I want to know what you think of an oil cooler behind your head, have you ever had a leak? Its the same. I use a compact rad on my 2.2 suby and it works fine.

So who is running a thermostat or not?

I'm doing a Ecotec swap. I talk to Tom at enginewiring.com yesterday and he said that most of the time they are setting the fans to come on about 162 deg. (Thats what he will be mine programing for.)

I was going to look for a 160 deg thermostat but after looking at some of the post maybe not.
It looks like few are not using one.

I'm in central Fl. so it does not get real cold here. What do you suggest?

I run a stock thermostat with a stock ECU . But I don't run an EGR. Might not mean anything .
