Seems like alot of us new guys want to know what to build and we hear alot of debate on these two deffinitions. So I have come up with some deffinitions in my opinion of what each is. I'm sure there will be some debate and tweeking of the deffinitions.

comp buggy = focus on parts is to add performance while keeping weight at a minimum

Trail buggy = focus on parts is to add duribility

a comp buggy will go anywhere a good trail buggy will, but not designed to handle the abuse for as long of a duration on some components

a good trail buggy will climb most of the hills a comp buggy will, but typically not as quickly due to weight

I think they carry alot of the same components. Mine is definently a trail buggy if it were between comp or trail. For heavins sake its a 4-seater. With that said I made the priorities comfort... suspension seats, long travel arms, coil overs among others.

Ya but I added a heavy duty power steering box for trail riding, heavy duty front combos, little things like that that will not add performance as much as durribility. A good weekend ride we get maybe 12 hrs of ridding in. A good comp u have 3 or 4 passes.

I sure hope a few of these Comp. buggys come to the hill climbs. I would like to see a few of them. I have never seen one.

No mine has lots of stock stuff on it it is not a competition only buggy. I even run a stock clutch cable. But it will take me where I want to go.

And what "I" think of as a comp buggy would run alot of stock VW front end parts. They are the lightest out there. But so far every part on mine that has broken on the trails has been stock VW. With the exception of a real thin set of aluminum front rims, and a cheep set of switches.

Maybe you just got some bad stuff. I have never had any problems with the stock German stuff.

Hard to know what the life of parts were over all those decades too.

And dont get me wrong, nothing against what I call a COMP BUGGY. Just seems that weight is the main priority, because it does mean a better climber. Where as what I would call a built trail buggy, weight is not as important as stronger more durable parts which tend to weigh more. Also comfort for long riding seems to play a larger role. Both have heavy duty drivetrain parts, and traction is esential. But look at areas like the front end. My heavy duty power steering and front spindles are very heavy, but much more durable then stock. Neither of which adds any performance but takes it away instead. In trade it gives me comfort and a little bit of peace of mind in the woods. With my boat anchor I'm not in the running to win any contest, but it does great on the trails and climbs all the hills that I have the stones to try  Not to mention it is the most comfortable vehicle I've ever ridden in off-road.
Back to my point of this thread. I see guys on here asking what they should build. I thought I would see if we could clarify the differences a little bit.

i dont think you are thinking the same way we are if its light its strong im running alum.trailing arms and iv put them thrue hell and never bent one but iv seen lots of steel ones bend.we could take two buggys to the top of a hill 1compbuggy as yall call them and 1 trail buggy roll them off and see what one has the most damage . we could use bruce's as the comp buggy and rock's as the trailbuggy

Lighter weight = less stress on the parts.
I'm game for that demo, let me know where I can watch it!
Nice to see ya back on here Willie.

i think yall forgot about the most important buggy, the beer hauler, it can be heavy and weak or light and strong but it will always have a cooler of cold ones and almost always makes it to the first drink stop  . and if you run out it will put a grin on your face when they come rolling down the trail!

Willie as you know some could not get to the top. And as I was told Rock-O is a Extreme hill climbing buggy. And mine is just a donut getter.

VERY GOOD POINT, Kenny.
The "beer hauler buggies" are very often the "spare parts and any tool you'd need buggy", too.
Dont know how many times one of these type of buggies have saved me or (someone I was helping) a trip to camp on a strap. Almost as many times as they have saved my buzz when I ran out of refreshments!

GOD BLESS the D.O.G.s!! 8)

I agree. Dont confuse a KY buggy as being a competition only buggy, Metz. Their "formula" was derived way before any organized climbing competitions were thought of. They get trail rode as much or more than any buggy. I dont think there has been a woodsbuggy built in KY yet with only the hillclimb comps in mind.

Like you said yerself, less weight is less stress. My two seater was built with sturdiness in mind rather than weight savings. It broke stuff way more often than my single seater does, and it didnt get put thru 1/3 of the abuse.
