It's an aircooled sideshift 6rib, it's not the 1 with the bigger reverse.

You will have to build a shifter or convert it to nose shift.
Alot stronger than a 3rib, but geared 4.57 as compared to 5.38 in the 3rib.
$250 imo.
Water cooled vanagons.

i have one for 300 with intermediate housing then all you need is a nose cone and sumone to convert it and you will have a stock nose shift 6 rib

In order to convert the 80-83-4 aircooled vanagon side shift to front shift, you will need the intermediate housing and front shifter housing from a front shift 6rib 76-79. The only parts from the side shift used in the conversion are the main case housing and gear stack.
Don't know if bellhousing can be made to work without changing the clutch fork, arm etc...
I've always used the bell from the front shift when converting.

Im glad I read this thread. It appears that unless you get one of these trannies dirt cheap they arent worth messin with. If you know how to change it yourself it may be worth it but for somebody like me its cheaper to get a regular 6 rib.

It has a stronger case most of the time. It is valuable for the case and extra parts if nothing else. Eric Debord put one of those cases on my tranny because of it's strength.

Even knowing that Im just thinking 200 bucks max price if you need the parts. Id rather spend 450 on a noseshift unless I plan a build on one. Just my 1 cent (Obama taxed the rest away)
