When i built my buggy My "donor" car had a new starter on it so i kept it. That and the shifter were the only parts I used. Now the starter has died and i need a new one. So looking around with my gooogle thingy I find the IMI 100, is this a good thing or not? About the same price as a new bosch. High torque gear reduction good stuff, or Offshore junk. Any one had one? Thanks Kendel

I bought one of the $119 gear reduction starters on ebay and it did not last a season. Recently I bought a late model beetle diesel automatic starter ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... MEWAX%3AIT) and did some mounting hole altering and so far it is wicked strong. It fits 3 rib bell housing,,,,,here is the link

Passat here. I've got a box full of junk 091 IMI starters. I called Kennedy Engineering 2 years ago and a guy there was nice enough to give me a straight up answer. He said my Buick V6 had so much torque that the bellhousing was slightly twisting to allow the flywheel to come over against the starter gear too close and somehow mess it up.I have been down every dirt road dead end and wasted enough money to send 3 California kids to college.OK ,I am a know it all, that learned every thing the HARD way, so when I speak, listen! I'm trying to show new folks the secret thru the mine field. The Passat will be down and dirty this week end and Me Richard Julie Joyce n Billy made some new hills we cut last week end that I'll tell ya straight up that my B@ll$ are like 2 BBs in a box car. That Passat has its own stock trans and starter and giant flywheel n clutch ,pressure plate that are still going STRONG.Does Sam Kenneson have to say ,"Quit making Calif people rich while your kids go with out shoes!!!!!!! UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!"

Thanks Brandon. They say Autozone has an automatic starter that has more power. All automatic starters fit a 002 trans regardless of vanagon or bus or beetle and have .8 hp verses something like .6 for manual. But still that diesel Rabbit starter will throw your motor across the yard.

For a 1641 the Autozone starter will suffice. I have one from Autozone & one from Advanced. Both lifetime warranty & they fire my 1915's perfectly. I am going to use one on my Pinto 2300 as well. When it screws up I swap it for a new one for no additional cost. I have yet to run an engine they wouldnt start but then again I keep running smaller engines. Just ask for one for a 73 beetle with auto trans & it will bolt right up to a 002 bellhousing.

Maybe if I can figure out how to put the 13.5 to 1 660 HP small block Mopar out of my Duster in my rail or better yet the 2007 5.4 GT500 engine sitting in my garage that dynoed at 831 HP (at the wheels) behind my 6 rib then Ill worry about that Autozone starter not being enough.

This is what it is going in

http://www.woodsbuggy.com/index.php?opt ... h&Itemid=8

I smoked the clucth going up a big hill in the wrong gear then my boy laid the clutch down when the clutch facing came off, then the starter quit turning it over are these things related?

If the battery has a full charge & the starting circuit wiring is OK it could be a coincidence. Otherwise I might suspect tranny problem. The wadded clutch has the motor tied to the input shaft of the trans & the tranny issue could be enough of a drag to slow the starter. Put the rear on jackstands & try cranking the starter. If it turns over is it turning the rear tires even in neutral?

BTW...there is a slight drag in neutral especially with cold trans oil that will let the tires spin in neutral with it jacked up but you can stop that by grabbing the tire. Im wondering if you have a slight gear engagement in neutral. Assuming the starter is good of course....

I charged the battery up and tried no better so i charged a second battery and ran both in paralel then I by passed the solenoid with pliers @ the starter still no good so i took the starter of and ran it on the end gate with jumper cables I turns but not superfast? So I figure it is weak. But I need to check tranny for? how? thanks Kendel

I did replace the clutch disc with a new one and the car did start after it was done so?
i try starting in neutral and push it around and the motor doesnt turn at all?

I guess the simple way to see if the trans is dragging on the engine is to push it on a flat surface. All my buggies roll fairly easily on a flat concrete floor. Does yours roll easily or do you bust a nut to move it 6 inches?

Rolls easy ,mabey it just got old and tired. i have had some luck with this junk, the alt. died due to a bad disconect . The reverse gear fryed the first time i loaded it on a trailer and i broke a spade of the axle in the driveway. I upgraded the trans and redid the disconect switch and the ignition switch is now a sealed kfour piece so the buggs are coming out of my buggy?

If it rolls easy I would toss a starter in it before checking other stuff. Definitely go with a automatic starter though.

Autozone #16300

I know the feeling. My new rail took nearly everthing I had to get to this point. If my C*NT ex hadnt given away my other rails I would be nearly finished by now & still have my rainy day fund to fall back on.

I can blame my ex. I had to spend 4K buying parts I already owned prior to the divorce.

my wife understands how much i would enjoy my freedom, and would not let me go that easy. So i am stuck in missouri when i really want to be in a warmer place. doing a job i dont enjoy thats boring just for the money There is good and bad with everything its just what you chose to do with it that makes all the difference. I have tried this year to spend this recession down but now I am about played out. So the overtime starts when we get back. I dont know whether to cry for joy or cry in torment. But the solstice is gone and the days are getting longer so in a month or three it all should be good again?

I spent 24 years with that creature that I nearly stood up at the altar. If only the other girl I was banging would have had her crap together I would have stuck with her. Other than my kids it all SUCKED!
