Just bought me and the wife Droid phones from Verizon. It has google maps built in. Look at google maps and then press satellite, shows a topigraphical map. You can do this on the phone and pull up a gps map of where you are at an offroad park!!! I cant wait to try this.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&sourc ... a=N&tab=wl

Tell me this won't come in handy when lost!

That's too cool!! I thought my Instinct was gonna be able to do stuff like that before I got it last year, part of the reason I wanted one. But it's gps navigation only shows streets, like a tomtom. :?

This would have been handy when I was lost and alone at D&K, if it would work out there. Would just be nice to know which way to head, lol.

not sure how good google maps is gonna work out in the woods but there are apps at the apps market on the droid that look like they will work more like a stand alone gps. "my tracks" looks like it will work well together with google maps. heres a few others that might work to. runner trainer, trailcoder, track me.
video on the (motorola) droid comes out pretty sweet but the best part is you can upload right to youtube. no more camera to laptop transfers. pictures can also be sent to photobucket the same way.
check out "trapster" it tells you where the cops sit and take radar along with the location of speed and red light cameras. it uses gps tracking, drains the battery fairly quick so plug it in while in use.
check this site out for more useful apps. http://www.androidanarchy.com/index.html

Some times the simplest things are best. $11 mount and a small ziplock!

Not sure but it's just starting to get comfy.
Anyone recognise the place on the map?

I'm assuming your gonna plug in a power cord while the phone is mounted. those apps are gonna kill the battery real quick.

Very cool indeed - those are magical little boxes for sure. With the right solid mount they make decent cameras too, complete with built-in editing software. As far as the mapping, the only "topical" needed here in Florida is the kind you put on your skin to keep from getting a sun burn. Flat a pancake as far as you can see.
