i want to put a cb in my buggy, i dont know too much about them. which ones are good ones? what kind of antenna is everyone using and how do you mount them? how far above the buggy frame do they have to stick up? i also heard, i dont know if its true or not, that once you hook the radio and antenna together you should not key the mike until you tune the antenna in, how is this done? dave |

The best radio is the cheapest POS you can get. Dust, mud and water will kill it sooner or later. I have a $60 Radio Shock 40 channel that seems to work real good. Some have radios that are BlueTooth compatable, $$$. As far as the antenna, as long as something is hooked to it you won't hurt anything. I have a SWR meter to tune it if need be. |

Back in the 23 channel days we just hooked or plugged everything together and started talking. Breaker 19 yea what he said |

I have set up tones of CB's for me and my friends in jeeps and other off raod vehicals that see alot of mud and sand... some can fit in amo boxes or some otter boxes...use a cheap external speaker so you can hear ppl and you can run a nice radio...with a fiberglass antena or a small 3ft whip positioned in the c enter of the roof...face it when you flip or roll the antena is going to probly break or bend no matter where you put it so you might as well put it where you get the best SWR's and that is in the center of the roof if you have a metal roof...if not pick a corner in the back... my favorit radio that i have worked with is a Cobra 29 LTD classic but they can get expensive... |

we been useing cbs for 15 or more years and your lucky to get a year or to out of one althrough there better than nothing they dont work that well. we decided to try a set of cobra 27 mile hand held raidos last spring and there the shtt. theres no place at d&k that we could not talk back to camp even from the oil tank and they fit in your shirt pocket or clip on your belt , 22 chanles & weather, rechargeable and last all day on a charge . so far there better than anything ive seen. |

I was very impressed by those little radios that Kenny is talkin about. I went to get me a set and had to go to three Wally-worlds to find a pair. The boy in electronics at the store where I finally found some said they discontinued them, I got the last set in that store. Thats about typical, find something that works good and they do away with it. |

Yea the 2 way raidoes work great I have been useing them for years . But realize if you get the ones that work good they are putting out 5 watts on high power and that means technically and leagly you need a license to operate it on hi power. Although I don't know anybody that has the license. MoblMec |

i have used gmrs/frs (general mobile radio service/family radio service) but most guys at wellsville use cb's the gmrs/frs radios work great but i found it to be kind of a p.i.a. to use when driving. i have my c.b. mike hanging from the roof where its ease to just reach over, key up the mike and talk. i have the cobra 29ltd with bluetooth.(around 100.00-140.00) this is really nice when you have kids always calling and you have to keep in touch via cell phone. i used to use the francis 4ft antenna but broke two of them riding through the woods. went with a 3ft firestick which is thicker and shorter. buy a radio with swr calibration built in so you can dial in the antenna for maximun range. |

MoblMec gmrs requires a license frs does not. i have never met anyone with a license for these radios and i dont think the fcc is gonna be out on the trail looking for law breakers |

90% of the time we use the CB is just to let the leaders of a group know we lost someone or about a breakage or one got stuck. We ussually don't have a long distance to cover so range isnt a huge issue. Worth having just to keep the group from getting devided, like ours did at D&K late on a muddy saturday night. Might not of mattered if at least one of us knew where we were. |

ya, i want to try and get a cb in for this weekend. i went driving around town, lookin for antennas and cbs, and i found out radio shack doesnt sell them anymore. i went to walmart, and they had one cheap radio and a magnetic antenna, i ended up driving out to richfeild at that pilot truck stop, and they had a whole bunch of stuff. my buddy gave me a radio, but i think its too big, i cant find a good place for it, so im probably gonna end up with the cobra from wal mart because its small. and i bought a 3 foot firestick, while i was at pilot, lookin at all of the radio stuff, i saw a handheld cb, has anyone tried one of those? dave |

I got an all in one CB right befor my first trip. It works ok once i spent $20 for a good antenna. Found it on ebay for $50. Its a cobra 40 channel. Now that I have a roof I'm gunna upgrade I think. If anyone gets this I do recomend an external speaker. |

The hand held CB's may not have the power to get out of the hollers. Look at how a cell phone loses its signal in the hollers. When I had a cheap Radio Shack CB with a 4 foot Firestick in my XJ it use to cut from Coupe to Yellow Creek loud and clear. With the full size CB you could zip tie the mike in a plastic bag to keep the mud out. With a hand held you are going to need to protect it, just think of how a beer can in the buggy looks after a ride. |
