Front brakes are very handy,,,to the point of necessary sometimes. Just not for backing down hills,,,,that is until you lose your back brakes

Now I was into rails for a few years then stopped but now getting back into it. So i know some stuff but That being said I have a question. I watched a lot of videos where people didn't make it up a hill and had to really feather the back brakes or flip. Has anyone ever ran an extra set of cutters brakes that controlled only the front tires, and ran some fronts with tread. I always ran 3 rib tractor fronts with no brakes, but I also never got myself into trouble do to never taking the time or effort in getting it running very good. If no one has done this do you think it'd be worth the effort. Thanks |

myself i would not run brakes on the front been there before could not steer it coming off the hill backwards rear discs is all thats on mine now i run bus brake calipers with jamar cutters |

Front brakes suck when backing down a hill. If they lock up, you will have NO steering and be at the mercy of gravity... I think that rear cutting brakes seem to work the best. I just go back and forth and that seems to keep things under control.. |

if you have your front breaks set up right, you'll love them. i run a master cylinder for the front and another one for the back. and in the pedal, i have a balance bar, that way i can adjust the pressure inbetween the front and the back, and then i also have a wilwood porportioning valve with the handle on it, so i can adjust how much break pressure i have on the front. i also run traction type tires up front. if you do mess up going up a hill and start coming backwards, and you start using your cutter breaks to steer you, in order for the cutter breaks to work, you have to release the break pedal. dave |

i like the front brakes on a seperate master cylinder. if u r backin down a hill u can use them if u want but dont have 2 if u need 2 steer. but they r very handy when u r goin forward down a steep hill when ur back brakes need the help.if they r helpful or hurtful is all in the way u use them imo |

its a personal preference kinda thing you will get manyt diff. answers.... personaly i will always run them, just use a proportioning valve..... |

CNC staging brake for the front and regular foot pedal with cutters for the rear. The only way to go, or not. |

Wont do nothing........ except maybe wrap your arm up in the steering wheel when it slams to whichever side front cutter you apply.   When you are backing down a hill of any steepness at all, the fronts are just skimming the ground anyways (if that much contact) . Like MM said, its best to just feather your foot brake and use your cutters to steer around stuff as you go back. |

Hey Gary, You have one of these with out the MC laying around? I set my last Buggy up with seperate brakes and the new Buggy up with common MC with Por valve . I have the one pictured but don't stock a staging brake. |

I plan on removing the front brakes from the existing setup and putting them on a seperate MC. I already have 2 brand new CNC MCs on the shelf. Just looking for a Handle and mounting bracket similar to the one shown. |

You prolly already know how, but I'll type it anyways in case there any other tight wads like me wanting to make one instead of buy.  An exhaust flange, same flange alot of people use to bolt their rear cage on, fits the bolt pattern of every m/c like that I've ran into. Weld the flange sticking straight up off the middle of a piece of about 2" x 10" 3/16 or so plate. Bolt the M/c to the flange, weld a tab stickin up just past the end of the m/c pushrod to make a pivot point for the bottom of the handle. Double tabs, one on each side of the handle, keeps the handle from sloppping around as much. I used handles out of old cuttin brakes that are wore out. Use a bolt as a pivot with brass or plastic washers between the handle and tabs and a nylok nut so it will stay on without having to tighten it down. Takes some time, less bling, but it sure is inexpensive.
