Looking for some opinions... I just swapped out my engine to a 2276 with 8:1 compression. Added a six rib tranny with a six rib started and now the buggy will not start. When I turn the key, it turns over REALLY slow. It bump starts no problem and runs great.. but it will not start by the key. I figured it was my small 925 odyssey battery but I got the same slow turn over when I hooked up my Jeep battery. At this point, I am guessing Starter or Timing? |

Try a different starter if you have one. But it would not hurt to check your timing 1st. It is very easy to check, if you do not have a timing light you should be able to go to Auto Zone and use the loan a tool program. |

Is the 6 rib starter new, or known to be a very good one? Check that initial timing, if its less than 10* BTDC, its about gotta be the starter. |

Also if the trans has sat for a long time with no starter on it make sure your bushing in the bellhousing is not corroded and causing the starter shaft to be tight and drag |

If by "bump start" you mean jumping across the solenoid on the starter, but wont start by key, its gonna be wiring between the switch and starter, or the key switch. Just my 2 cents |

Thanks everyone. I am going to see if I can borrow a starter from a local vw shop. Hopefully, that will fix the problem. For Bump Start.. I mean get it rolling and let the clutch out.. |

It is amazing what proper timing will do.. I was 30 degrees advanced at idle.. Now that I set it to 8 degrees, the buggy starts right up Thanks for all of the support |

Glad you got it starting now, but I'm glad it gave you enough trouble that you checked that timing. 30 initial wouldve gave you about 54 total, (even more if you are running MSD dizzy with the smallest advance stop bushing!) Could've been ALL bad if you reamed on it for a while on a hot day at 54+ degrees of advance! |
