Our new buggy is terrorizing most traditional buggies and I only have less than $5K including the trailer. You can see it in action on opening day when I had bad plug wires, under pics n videos, 3 pages back, under "check this out" by "diablo".By the way,Terry Yerby(DIABLO)is my partner. It has a 175 hp VW Passat VR6 before removing cat converter, smog pump, pwr steering, and air cond.I used motor and the front wheel drive trans, turned them long ways, ran a stock vw bus c/v shaft from trans to a 327:1 Ford 8.8 Thunderbird indepedent( w/cv's) rear end, welded Porshe 930 joints to it then down to Thunderbird stub axle and disc brake assembly with Ford Thunderbird factory aluminum wheels($25 ea. Junkyard) with 38" swamppers no need for cutting. The majic is in the vw ring and pinion multiplying thru the ford 8.8 inch NOT 7.5 ring and pinion. 1st gear is the equivalent to a 1000:1, 2nd is a 560:1,3rd is 4:00 and 4th and 5th is I don't know but perfect for 65 mph.The Passat,Jetta and New Beetle trans comes in about 10 different ratios plus automatics, Ford or other diff makers come in many so you can have nearly any final drive you desire. Inverted old '1971 ford truck springs are the suspension which is adjustable for hiegth,17"-20.5" is usual. The fuel injection computor harness out of the Passat is simple to hook up aswell as the Passat radiator and exaust. The stock Passat gear shifter and cables stay connected and roll around and bolt to the floor between the seats. Here is the money you save.No torsion housing or bars,no adapter plate, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, starter, high dollar trans, exaust, dual carbs etc.The VR6 2797 already features factory performance parts dual cams fuel injection aluminum heads 10:1 compression, 93 octane is perfect, and a massive clutch. The oil pressure directs the cam shafts to automatically retard or advance for power and acceleration.I bought the whole wrecked car for $1200 with 116K miles on it.It's considered a mid engine which does not have ANY uncommanded wheelies or stand ups, so you can stay in the throttle with one hand on the bottle.Sagging is minimal on the hill slopes sideways. You can also drive from either side or together. Chain drive buggies, traditional and solo seaters are awesome but you can't beat this bang for your buck or the hollar for your dollar.Go further and consider front wheel drive Nissan Toyota Honda Buick 3800 etc. Some fwd cars ,you can use the rear axle for your trailer. Mine came from a Corsica Thanks for reading
and ride safe. Dave Phillips from Alabama.I'm not here to brag, just to help others or I would keep it to myself. I'm justa junkyard dog with a slide rule and a bucket of tools.

Sounds pretty cool... Unique.
But by saying "terrorizing treaditional buggies" you dont mean it's better than them do you?
Sounds cool. Bring it up to D&K to give it the ultimate test. We'll find a good place for ya to show us how it's done. 8)

Jelly Jr,,he did say "most" traditional buggys,,,I don't think you got anything to worry about,,,I know David a little and he is always thinking outside the box,,,I like him,,,wonder why. Let's hunt up a hole to put a small ax in and line em up for a good cause.

Welcome to the site!
Buggy design sounds killer! Looks like it goes well on the vids!! Lots of wheel speed.
Great ingenuity!!

You make a pretty strong statement in your very first sentence of your very first post.
I like that. No sense beatin around the bush. Tell us how ya really feel.

I'll return the favor, here's how I feel:
Bring it on up here Labor Day and show everybody what it will do on a HILL instead of that little straight shot bank in the videos. There's lots of traditional buggies here that you can 'terrorize'.
We'll pick a few hills out, go head to head at 'em. Then we'll laugh it off over a few cold ones and I'll tow you back to camp after we put you back over on your wheels! I'll even cook ya some supper, my treat.

Then, after you fix your roof, take 'er up to Wellsville, there's a few traditional buggies up there too that you can terrorize. Follow some of them regulars up there a few minutes, then we'll see who is "terrorized".

David,,don't let them Jelly boys intimidate you,,, they really a bunch of softies  ,,,I will go with you on Labor day and us Bama boys will have a great time with them little tired buggy boys and gals. I know a place at the competition hills where we can show our stuff after they spank us on them newcut serpintines.

How about Pickwick early this fall?? I never been to either one, but got plans for Pickwick already.
Nice Rhyme there, Eminem. But, I aint worried about slowing down in front of you, I'll be WAY further up the hill than you can get to.
BTW, thanks for changing your post to at least acknowledge your concept is a "better bang for you buck", not just "better" period. AND thanks for posting in the first place, been kinda bored on here lately and you riled me up.

I had to weld up the spider gears.Cram a nut between the teeth and weld them up GOOD and fat.Keep the stub axles installed on both sides to show you where to weld and where not to weld. Don't worry about the plastic shims melting because they are never going to spin again anyway.Remove ALL slag after welding of coarse or you will be hurtin' for certain. The stub axle flanges are identical to bus bolt pattern. Use an old bus c/v outer to weld on to Ford differential input shaft then tap and thread it for 3/8 course threads.Dave

4x4 extreme (tv show) just did this with a honda 4cyl for a crawler. was thinking of doing it with my quad4. wasnt sure if the gearing would be to low. Got a manual tranny in it? I wanted an auto but was afraid it would just bounce thru the first cpl of gears.

This buggy is heavy. It puts a no slip lip grip on these uncut tires. Where is Pickwick ?I would love to go up North. Never experienced it. Hey I'm up with the challenge. I love yalls humiliation you dish out! But nothing is in this for me and I'm not here to put anybody down, maybe rubbing it in a little to get some motivation.I want to see a man run with this idea and go further into the end zone.Maybe a caveman thought of it 1st,I don't know. But I do know this buggy is smoking my ole heavy 3800 Buick single seater.
